  1. Why Are Co-Curricular Activities Are Important? Co-curricular activities include activities, programs, and learning experiences that complement what students are learning in class. Essentially, such activities are experiences that are connected to, reinforce, or mirror the most academic curriculum or syllabi activities. Co-curricular activities are also defined as being distinct from academic courses i.e as extracurricular activities. Nevertheless, the normal distinctions between academic and co-curricular programs are gradually being eroded as almost every IB, CBSE or ICSE board schools in Delhi are increasingly integrating various programs, activities, and experiences into the regular educational curriculum. Interestingly, co-curricular and extracurricular activities were traditionally seen as being distinct from each other although both sorts of programs were offered by most faculties. Co-curricular programs and activities were seen as being explicitly connected to academic learning, while extracurricular activities weren't. More recently, this distinction has become extremely ambiguous in practice; and therefore the terms are increasingly getting used interchangeably, which means that each one of these activities is integral parts of the academic school curriculum. Perks of indulging in co-curricular activities: 1. Social Interaction And Skill Development It’s easy to forget when a child is engaged in book learning, but interacting peers is essential to ensuring that a child’s high school experience is as rich as it can be. Even if they’re not someone who finds social situations easy, joining a faculty club is a perfect way for them to interact with to meet like-minded individuals. Having fun with friends will make the high school experience more enjoyable, and those social skills will come in handy once the university or the first job begins. Never underestimate the importance of connecting to others –there’s power in building networks. The friends your child makes tomorrow might be those who support your child whole life through. 2. Improvement in Academic Performance You might worry that participating in co-curricular activities will detract children from schoolwork, but that isn’t the case. It is said that active participation in an activity you’re hooked in will improve your brain functioning. It helps develop your concentration and time management skills. For example, sports activities will train you to focus, build stamina, and teach you to stay trying within the face of failure or difficulty. Students who get involved in other areas of student life are also likely to have a more positive outlook on school and future studies. In short, co-curricular activities could offer you a plus when it involves improving your academic performance.

  2. 3. Stress Management And Relief Focussing on academic work, studying for exams, preparing for the future – these things can become overwhelming for a child or any person for that matter. Co-curricular activities provide you with the chance to concentrate your efforts elsewhere . For an hour or two, you can escape whatever it might be that’s stressing you out and relax into something productive. Theatre or public speaking will build your self-confidence. Sports will keep you healthy and happy. It’s a good way to release tension and improve health simultaneously. 4. Increased options High school is the ideal time to challenge oneself by trying new things and considering new perspectives. Through participating in co-curricular activities, your child might find a replacement interest, a hidden talent, or maybe a career goal. Not everyone finds their inspiration in the classroom. If not that then they can always find new experiences that inform and shape their opinions towards the academic subjects. Developing as a person is all about putting yourself out of your comfort zone – students who have studied abroad know just how impactful the experience was in helping them to mature, be independent, and consider new perspectives. The same goes for co-curricular activities, challenge yourself, it is recommended to try as many as you'll and find those that cause you to a far better person. 5. College and University Applications Co-curricular activities are an important part of any good university application. They can show longevity: that a student knows how to commit to something and stick with it. Also, passion: if you’ve put your heart and soul into interest, it suggests you’re capable of doing the same with your studies. Finally, leadership: Taking the initiative, driving a team effort, being bold in deciding how you want to spend your free time, even organizing your own club after school or leading one – these are all the sorts of attributes that university admissions officers will be on the lookout for. Many extracurricular activities also have added advantage of scholarships and placements.
