  1. Roman Architecture Essay Roman Architecture Many centuries before the birth of Christ, the city of Rome grew, prospered, and developed into a thriving Republic. As in most cultures, Rome's buildings became more elaborate and impressive. They developed fantastic building technologies and ideas. The feats of Roman engineers were groundbreaking, and many structures built by this culture still stand today. With knowledge borrowed from the Greeks, Rome made impressive architectural achievements, these were namely major attributes of buildings, colossal structures, and a legacy that would influence later buildings (Cornell and Matthews 11). According to legend, the city of Rome was founded in about 753 BC, by a group of shepherds. It sat at an ideal...show more content... The ancient Romans created and borrowed fundamental types of concepts that made up buildings. The ideas that the Romans borrowed were basic ideas such as the column. A column is a vertical shaped pillar with the chief design concern of supporting a building. Most columns consist of three parts, the base, the shaft, and the capital. The shaft is usually cylindrical in shape. The Greeks had three basic types of columns, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. All three types have narrow fillets on them. These were small vertical slits that ran the length of the column. The Romans modified the column and added two types, Truscan and Composile. The columns became widely used in homes and temples in Greece and later in Rome ("Architecture"). The Romans also borrowed from the Greeks other major structural designs. On the top of a column on most temples and public buildings rested an Entablature. This is a classic triangular shaped façade, or front of a building. The Entablature consists of four parts. The lowest part is the Architrave, which sits on top of the capital or upper part of a column. On top of that, the frieze was typically decorated with horizontal bands. The Cornice forms the upper part of the Entablature and extols beyond the frieze on the sides. On the very top sits a Pediment, a triangular segment between the lower Entablature and the roof ("Architecture"). The Romans borrowed the ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  3. ("Architecture Careers"634). The type of person who chooses architecture as a profession tends to be highly creative, curious, and inclined to propose global solutions to problems. On the other hand, the type of person who chooses to be an engineer is usually pragmatic, unimaginative, and inclined to compile data to find the best solution. Architectural engineers combine both ways of thinking to learn which way of thinking should be used in certain situations on certain projects. Architectural engineering students take courses in the theory and practice of aesthetic design, and architectural history with architecture students. They also take courses in calculus, physics, and materials science with engineering students (Belcher 3). "The most difficult classes were those that involved mechanical and electrical engineering because they only touched on subjects that require years to master (Cox Personal Interview)." There are several steps to becoming an architectural engineer. The first step is to obtain a Bachelor of Science ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  4. Architecture Essay Influences of Spanish Architecture in Mexico Spanish expeditions conducted during the seventh and eighteenth century has brought a variety of architectural and artistic influences to the different indigenous regions of the New Americas. It is documented that "the Architecture of Mexico began with the Spanish conquest of the country." (Mullen, 18) The architecture of Mexico has exhibited much richness and wealth, has displayed the political and religious conditions of the time, and has showed off the countries beauty and grace through different artistic devices, mainly through the ornamentation of buildings. The architecture that developed in Mexico during the military expeditions and colonization of Mexico has brought forth many...show more content... Churches built during this period usually had a dome along with a rectangular plan. This was the period of introduction to both domes and the cruciform plan in the New Americas. During the Spanish conquest through the Americas the conquistadores discovered mining as a valuable commodity in Mexico. Knowing how precious these metals were, the conquistadores forced the Indians to labor for large quantities of these precious minerals. The Spaniards also found lot of material available for the use of masonry. All of these conditions made it possible for the construction of many churches, palaces, houses, bridges, and aqueducts to have been built. The advancement of Spanish architecture in the New Americas incorporated different styles, which include Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Moorish, Mudejar and the Churrigueresque orders. All these different orders of architecture brought from Spain have highly influenced the religious life of American Natives. There are three cities in Mexico in which I noticed an important significance of religious architecture in the community; these being Puebla, Cholula, and Tlaxcala, each colonial city displaying different styles of colonial architecture. The architecture in Puebla, Mexico is comprised of Franciscan and Mexican Baroque Architecture. The city of Puebla is found about 60 miles southeast of Mexico City. Throughout its history is has been known by various names: City of Angels, City of Tiles, and ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  5. Architecture Analysis When humans described architecture common synonyms that they might use would being design, building, planning, engineering, shape, color and more other words. My definition of architecture is by using the combination of art and math. The architect main goal to design a structure that is going to make the client comfortable. In order to give the client what they need and what they have to be comfortable in the space that the architect is planning for them. It's important for architects to know the average measurement for thinks like the hallway, room, bathroom, etc. Knowing all those measurement is where math comes to play. You have a piece of land and by using math you have to measure out everything in order to organize how to fix everything you need. Without coming to the client uncomfortable by having everything to big or too small. No matter what you're dealing with if it's a house, hotel, office building in order for an architecture to construct a functional and comfortable structure its have to within the guidelines of the codes....show more content... That's been art comes to play. The art of architecture is what make a client in invest in the structure. Having art gives the structured life. For the architect, their canvas is the plot of land that they have to build. It's up to the architect to create the structure into a masterpiece for the community. Is math is to make the structure safe and the art is hat makes the structure appealing to the humans eyes. You can define architecture many ways and they all can be right. 6. Essay on Greek Architecture Greek Architecture The Greek culture has had a huge impact on the history of the world. There is something Greek in almost everything, especially in the world's architecture. Greece no longer had one king, so they focused on building temples for their gods. Architecture began small and plain but evolved into impressive pieces of art. As time passed from the Archaic period to the Hellenistic period, the people of Greece developed a type of formula for their buildings and their pieces of art. In Ancient Greece, religion dominated their life, so it is understandable that their architecture would be dominated by their religion. Before Greece became many different city–states, they had kings, and they would build a room called a...show more content... They are also described as being entasis, meaning that about two thirds of the way up the column begins to taper in. The fluting of the columns was hallowed out semi–circles. The entablature of a Doric temple is also very plain. The cornice is plain, meaning there is no ornament on the cornice. The frieze is broken up into triglyphs and metopes. A triglyph are a series of sculpted vertical lines, and a metope is a plain area. The architrave is one full piece with no ornament. An Ionic temple is considered to be feminine. The Ionic temple is very different to the Doric. An Ionic column is very sleek and slender. Just like the Doric column, the Ionic column is proportioned to its diameter. The height of an Ionic column is nine to ten times the diameter. The column has a base and the capital is more decorative with the use of scroll volutes. The fluting is very much like the Doric except there is a flat area in between every hallowed out semi–circle. The entablature of an Ionic temple has a lot more decoration. The cornice and the frieze with both have some sort of ornament or sculpture. The architrave is broken up into three or four pieces. The Corinthian order is not used much in Ancient Greece. The Corinthian column is much like the Ionic but the capital is decorated with acanthus leaves. The Corinthian column is used mostly on the interior and becomes widely used in Ancient Rome. A Greek temple can be classified in three ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  7. Classical Architecture Essay Classical Architecture The West has always put a great emphasis on how beholden it is to many cultural and political institutions derived from Classical Antiquity. This has been most consistent in aesthetic conceptions of art and architecture. Many monuments and architectural traditions of the West derive directly from ancient sources, in an attempt to link the ideals of modern life with those of ancient Greece and Rome. Nowhere is this more evident than in the capitol of the United States where a Neo–Classical style predominates. The Lincoln Memorial built in 1822 embodies the conscious attempt to sanctify an American President with a classical model. It was based upon the quintessential classical building of the Parthenon. The...show more content... The Parthenon has served as an architectural model on which to instill the connection between the Ancient and Modern worlds. It is no wonder that the young American Republic would latch onto the Neo–Classical ideal that dominated European aesthetics for the first half of the 19th century. They wished to both sanctify a fallen leader and idealized man, and make a conscious connection with the first democratic society. They chose the Parthenon as their model precisely because it serves as the climax of the Greek political and artistic lives. Lincoln would be sitting within a recess behind fluted columns, much like the venerated statue of Athena within the Parthenon by the sculptor Pheidias. This temple structure dedicated to Lincoln simultaneously venerates an American President and links him with every core Classical ideal by its modeling the design of the Parthenon. American architects seemed to be insinuating that the capitol of the new Republic was a new Athens. This was politically, as a democratic Republic, and culturally as the supposed exemplar of the liberal humanist vision of the free citizen. A monument like the Lincoln Memorial coalesced what the Republic desired itself to stand for. The same thing transpired in 5th century BCE when Pericles pushed for the rebuilding of the Acropolis, and the Parthenon. Its sculptures ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
