The EU-China Cooperation Workshop held in Beijing on October 28, 2008, gathered experts from various institutions, including IHEP, BUPT, INFN, and PKU. Participants discussed the state and future perspectives of grid infrastructures such as EUChinaGRID, ChinaGrid, and CNGrid. The workshop emphasized the need for high-speed network improvements to support data transfers for major projects like LHC. Collaboration on scientific data management, interoperability among infrastructures, and common research standards were also key topics to enhance global research and education capabilities.

EU-China CooperationWorkshop Beijing 28 October 2008
Participants • Gang Chen – IHEP CAS • Yaodong Cheng – IHEP CAS • Junsheng Yu – BUPT • Shaohua Liu – BUPT • Giuseppe Andronico – INFN • Patricia Ho Hune – ERCIM • Sijin Qian – PKU Co-chair - Rapporteur • Federico Ruggieri – INFN – Co-Chair • Jinlei Jiang - Tsinghua University • Wenyang Yu – CEODE CAS • Sungen Deng - CNIC CAS
Status and Perspectives (1) • IHEP: Partner in EUChinaGRID, Tier2 centre for LHC and ARGO-YBJ experiments (support from CAS 15 MRMB) 2000 new CPUs 600 TB disk. Using the TEIN2/ORIENT link to Europe (2.5 Gbps) with 500 Mbps mean and 800 Mbps peak. Need a Network speed increase to sustain high throughput data transfers from CERN and from YBJ. • BUPT: Node in ChinaGrid managed by the Computer Information Centre, development in network transport to support new high performance applications (mobile, etc.), plans to increase Computing resources. • Tsinghua Univ: Node of CNGrid, ChinaGrid (sw development) and CROWN. Plans for expanding the CNGrid, and ChinaGrid resources. • CEODE: Spatial Information GRID, large satellite data and cooperation with ESA.
Status and Perspectives (2) • CNIC: EUChinaGRID Partner, Site and Operation Centre of CNGrid, 7000 Cluster (1000 CPUs) and large repository of Scientific Data. • INFN: Managing the Italian Grid Infrastructure and part of EGEE, 10.000 CPUs and 1PB in Italy, a factor 10 in EGEE. 4 new projects funded in the South of Italy (40 M€) with a total 8.000 CPU cores and 400 TB storage. Interoperation using an enriched version of gLite. High speed networking 1-10 Gbps links. • PKU: EUChinaGRID Partner, participating to LHC experiments (Tier3 of LCG affiliated to Tier1 in Taipei), heavily dependent on Network Connectivity to EU (TEIN2/ORIENT), recent support from MOST (National Key Laboratory), plans to increase the Computing resources, applications also in Biology and Archaeology (future).
Hot Topics • Continue to support International High Speed Networks for Research and Education: TEIN2/ORIENT -> TEIN3 • Interoperability among several Grid Infrastructures CNGrid, ChinaGrid, CROWN, EGEE, DEISA, etc., proposing and implementing standards (OGF, ETSI). • Interoperation & Management: common procedure based on best practices, compatible (or even common) tools, ticket systems, etc. • Information systems and Monitoring: compatible systems for resource advertising and discovering. • Cross Infrastructures Applications: based on the complementary infrastructures: Data Repositories, Cooperation on large challenges (Climate change, Emerging Diseases, etc.)
