  7. M1 alignment strategy 1st step: • Wall alignment within LHCb coordinate system. • Target holders have been prepared  Alignment foreseen in the week of Dec 1 in open and closed positions, including repeatability check. Takes about 3-4 days. 2nd step: • Prepare horizontal alignment bars (top and bottom) and support bars for perpendiculars (needed for hor. and vert. chamber alignment).  With this method the chamber alignment is simplified • Mount chamber supports with an approx. vert. alignment based on excel tables and measurements with the laser distance meter (LDM), • Ensure all crosses on the chambers are correctly placed and start installing chambers of the first layer. (Additional crosses on the R1 and R2 chambers are needed due to visibility problems behind the RICH2 HPD boxes.) • Install alignment tools and align properly chamber supports and the chambers already installed. Vertical alignment: LDM; horizontal alignment: perpendicular  Foreseen in the 2nd half of January. 3rd step: • Align the chambers of each side/layer as the installation and the testing proceeds. It will take about 2 days per side (A, C, b, f, and layer) with this improved method.

  8. M1 alignment Responsibilities: • The 1st Step one will be carried out by Jean-Christophe Gayde and Thomas Schneider with help of Cedric and BS. • The 2nd step will be prepared by Thomas Schneider and carried out by Thomas, Wander Baldini, Jean-Christophe, AC and BS. • The 3rd step will be carried out by Thomas and Wander with help of Sasha Granik, AC and BS.

  9. M1 chamber supports and alignment preparation Planning takes into account: • New alignment strategy • Situation with the chamber supports • Constraints from Calorimeter System • We are about 2 weeks late with respect to this planning • Chamber top fixations are still in the drawing phase, • production can start only on January 12 • Alignment tool design starts only on January 5

  10. Conclusion from the last LHCb week • Completion of M1 is very late. • Given: • the present status of M1, • the complications in the installation and debugging of M1, • the remaining commissioning work for M2-M5, • the small number of experts for commissioning and debugging, • the possibility of surprises during the M1 installation, it is not realistic to assume that M1 can be closed before end of May / early June. • Alessandro and myself will push hard to ensure that the Muon Group follows this new schedule.
