  1. Alignment Diagnostic System Status Content • Refresh ADS… • Schedule as planned… • Status of Ingredients & Integration … • Summary 1

  2. Refresh… Required stability of the Undulator PRD 1.4 - 001 – rev3, by Heinz Dieter Nuhn, SLAC Transverse motion of components should be lower as: • X & Y Position of Quads (3s)2 micro meter • Undulator segment - Pitch 16 microradian - Yaw 30 micro radian - Roll 1000 micro radian 2

  3. Refresh… Undulator motions expected • Shrinking of construction concrete Trends: ~ One millimeter / year or 2 - 3 micrometer / day • Thermal driven transverse motions Cycles: Heating or cooling of supports Swing: - 0.5 < T < 0.5 degree K results into 10 - 15 micrometerdepend on thermal capacity. Microns Trends days Microns Cycles hours Required tolerances are much tighter, that leads to the Alignment Diagnostic System [ADS] 3

  4. Refresh… ADS = Combination of Water & Wires • Hydro Level System [HLS] by Georg Gassner, SLAC HLS sensor measures vertical distances to a common water level. • Wire Position Monitor [WPM] System WPM measures horizontal & vertical distances to a stretched wire. Combination of both leads to controlled Undulator X & Y position data 4

  5. Refresh ADS… Task, Geometry & Layout Position tracking of 33 Undulator Segments on a sub-micrometer scale. Water level and two stretched wires will be used as reference lines B A Beam 33 1 BPM s Undulator132 m ADS control section 140 m 5

  6. Refresh ADS... Quality and Quantities Wire Position Monitor System • Resolution < 100 Nanometer • Instrument drift < 100 Nanometer/day • Number of sensors ~ 140 X- & Y-positions • Type of sensor Electro magnetic Hydro Leveling System • Resolution ~ 1 Micrometer • Instrument drift < 100 Nanometer/day • Number of sensors ~ 140 Y- positions • Type of sensor Capacitve and Ultra sonic Wire monitor HLS monitor 6

  7. ADS Status & Integration Preliminary Design Review on ADS in August 06 Report summary: Go ahead… Order equipment & sensors soon as possible… Study temperature effects of quadrupoles & supports… 7

  17. Integration of Wire End Station: Under design 17

  18. Integration of WPM electronic: Engineering Five substations will be located inside the Undulator section and one upstream One substation controls transverse positions of three segments on each side Two BPM s, ahead of the Undulator will be connected with the WPM system 18

  19. Integration of WPM substation: Engineering HLS pipe Control of 6 U- Segments 19

  20. Summary • According to the planned schedule: • All major ADS construction activities seems to be on track. • All relevant components of ADS are tested, successfully. • All HLS readout electronic and all HLS sensors are on order. • According to integration into the Undulator: • ADS components are now integrated into the Undulator design. • Fiducialization will be a part of standard assembly procedures. • No delays for installation and commissioning expected, until now.
