  3. 40,000-125,000 years ago • First settled indigenous Australians • Throughout time and into the 1500s Oceania did not develop at the same rate as the rest of the world. • They had hunter-gatherer societies for a long time and didn’t get involved or progress in the same way as Europe because they didn’t have large animals and they were geographically distant from the rest of the world.

  4. 1200 C.E. – 1700s C.E. • 900-1500: Tu’I Tonga Empire founded in 900 C.E. and expanded between 1200 and 1500 C.E. • 1500s-1700s: Europeans explored Oceania (Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Tonga, and Fijian Islands). • 1788: Colonies in Australia

  5. 1800s • 1840: Colonies in New Zealand • 1850s: SeruEpenisaCakobau became first king of Fiji • 1857: U.S. expands into Pacific-starts with Baker Island and Howland Island • 1872: Colonies in Fiji • 1874: Title of king of Fiji passed to British crown • 1876: Great Council of Chiefs established in Fiji • 1884: Colonies in New Guinea • 1893: George Tupou II became first king of Tonga • 1898: Hawaii became U.S. territory

  6. 1900s-Present day • 1900: Tonga and Niue colonized • 1900s: Both Australia and New Zealand became dominions • 1904: Manu’a colonized • Oceania not highly involved in WWI • 1942-1945: WWII- Japan invades New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and other Pacific Islands • 1946: Polynesians granted French citizenships • 1970: Fiji and Tonga become independent, followed by other nations • 1990s: Civil war in New Guinea results in political autonomy
