The Birth of a Republic • Republic formed • The Etruscans ruled Rome for over 100 years under the Tarquin family • In 509 B.C., a rebellion takes place and a republic is formed • The citizens now have the power • Over time, the Romans defeated the Latins, Etruscans, and Greeks to control all of Italy

  4. The Birth of a Republic 2. Why was Rome so strong? • Excellent soldiers • Roman fighting changed from a Greek-style into legions • Legions: 6000 men, them groups of 60 to 120 • Legionaries (soldiers) • Legions carried a standard (tall pole with symbol)
