The Victorian Era (1800’s) • Social classes started to merge and the new “middle” class were interested in sport (blurred the line between the rich and the poor) • Sports clubs were developed to meet the needs of little space for a growing interest (funded by spectators) • Victorian Ideal of the gentleman athlete and amateur - believed that fair play and participation in sporting events more important then winning - amateur sport developed to avoid playing in “mixed” company. Excluded the lower class from participating.

The Victorian Era cont’d • Believed that sports created “manly” characteristics and camaraderie amongst men • It was believed that physical activity/sport for women was harmful on their “delicate” bodies and would have a negative impact on child barring abilities • Physical education and sport seen as an important part of a young man’s education (“sport builds character”) and thus the British public (private) schools implemented many sports. Rugby, soccer, cricket etc.

  15. 20th Century Canadian Achievements • The modern Olympic games developed in _ _ _ _ in _ _ _ _ _ _ by P_ _ _ _ _ D_ C_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ after founding the I _ _ in 1894. • The games were for Gentlemen only (men who earned a living doing physical work were excluded) and no women. • Spectators began watching sports outside of the Olympics. Teams wanted to have best teams in order to keep fan base therefore began to pay players so they could give up day jobs to play the sport

Cont’d • Professional sport leagues began to develop with rules (NFL, NHL, CFL, NBA) and there were a lot of Canadian teams involved (1917 first NHL season 5 teams, Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, Toronto Arenas) • TV brought all people together to watch sport from around the world.
