    3. 3 Adherence to Treatment: Issues for Children ARV treatment for children requires: Collaboration between the child and caregiver(s) Commitment of the caregiver(s) Cooperation of the child ARV treatment for children is complicated by: Developmental stage/age of the child Parent-child interaction Psychosocial milieu Relatively poor palatability of many pediatric formulations Caregiver factors We would like to begin to consider ways that an approach to adherence in children may differ from adherence in adults. You cannot simply hand the pills over to a baby and suggest they take them twice daily. It is a touch more complicated, primarily in the ways noted in this slide. The next several slides review some adherence data on children with HIV. These are European and US studies the specific ARVs used may not be relevant in your clinic - but the issue of adherence is critically important in both resource rich and resource limited settings.
