Center for Teaching Excellence mission • To develop communities of practice around teaching and learning challenges and opportunities • To foster growth in individual teaching capacities throughout a faculty member’s professional career • To support interdisciplinary and cross-campus collaboration • To guide academic and career departments in exploring goals, objectives and teaching proficiencies • To foster a campus environment where learning about learning is a central, valued, and an ongoing process

  6. At BCC, faculty members and writing fellows participate in monthly WAC professional development seminars. New Faculty Seminars Seminars include informational presentations, group discussions and interactive workshops that introduce faculty to college resources in support of their: • Acclimatization to the Campus • Professional Development • Best Teaching Practices The camaraderie and collegial support that develop in the seminars foster the integration of new faculty into the college community. Career and Professional Coaching for the Workplace • Faculty involved who teach key courses in Dietetics and Nutrition, Education and Human Services, and Paralegal Departments • Discussions focused on the needs of the students in each discipline to prepare them for jobs and positions in their prospective profession • Faculty design five-week modules in their course providing opportunities for students to reflect upon their prospective career through various oral and written activities and projects. contact: Professor Diane D’Alessio, 718-289-5687

The goal of the Quantitative Reasoning Initiative is to provide more continuity to the teaching and reinforcement of quantitative reasoning skills in basic science such as beginning courses in biology and chemistry. • Faculty have developed innovative modules in various relevant quantitative tasks Contact: Dr. Laura Broughton (718) 289-5522

Integrated Skills Reinforcement (ISR) Integrates the following skills into courses across the curriculum: • Communication skills of writing, reading, listening, and speaking • Researching information that will enhance the students’ term papers and field reports • Applying technology to college work • Critical thinking and problem solving Emphasis is placed upon early assessment of the students’ communication skills, as well as student/teacher assessment of assignments given during the semester. LETME • The Reading, Learning and Thinking Seminar is a semester-long examination of teaching innovations based upon learning theories • Participants explore and experiment with learning and teaching strategies based upon cognitive science that can be easily infused into instruction across the disciplines Contact:Dr. Harriet Shenkman, CTE Director

The Scholarship of Teaching: Faculty Development Through Cross-Campus Collaboration • A collection of faculty writings on teaching and learning • Twenty-two professors from Bronx Community College, Lehman College and Hostos Community College write about a journey of inquiry stimulated and informed by faculty development opportunities they experienced • Published Fall 2007
