Charter Schools June 11, 2013
Schools to be Chartered • Litchfield Elementary • Palm Valley Elementary • Rancho Santa Fe Elementary • Western Sky Middle
Why were these schools chosen? • They have charter-school-like qualities. • Special programs that distinguish themselves from other schools in the District.
Our Charter Schools • Litchfield – Future STEM program in Science and/or Math • Palm Valley – Student Health & Fitness • Rancho Santa Fe – Emphasis in Early Childhood • Western Sky – Advance Math program through Millennium High School
Requirements to be Chartered • Application • Charter • Approval by the Litchfield Elementary School District Governing Board • Notification to State State Board of Education and Arizona Department of Education
Impacts • No impact on school operations – charter staff and students treated the same as non-charter • No impact on calling for overrides or bond elections • No impact on school labels
Impacts • If charter is converted back to non-charter then increased funding received would be returned to State. • Funding increase of approximately $1,152 per student beginning in FY2014-2015. • Entire funding increase would come from state aid.
Impacts • May not receive growth funding for FY2013-2014 – ADE current interpretation of statue does not allow for growth funding during first year of conversion. Higley Unified School District has requested an Attorney Generals opinion on this issue. • No transportation funding for charter students
