Ideas • off-the-shelve LMS: ready made LMS - Blackboard, WebCT • using an open source learning management platform: Moodle, Sakai • creating an in-house custom-design LMS: custom made according to the needs of the users - SPIN • engaging an e-content provider: subject content expert – all faculties having their own content experts

  3. How we decide? • using SurveyMonkeyas tool to decide • majority voted on open source LMS

Open source learning management platform Definitions: a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content (Ellis, 2009) a free software / no licensing Learning Management System: manages, tracks and reports on interaction between the learner and the content & the learner and the instructor.

  5. Advantages of Open Source LMS • The availability of the source code and the right to modify it is very important. It enables the unlimited tuning and improvement of a software product • The right to redistribute modifications and improvements to the code, and to reuse other open source code, permits all the advantages due to the modifiability of the software to be shared by large communities. • The right to use the software in any way. • There is no one with the power to restrict in a unilateral way how the software is used, even in a retroactive way • There is no single entity on which the future of the software depends. • There is always the possibility of ``forking', or creating an alternative code base if the current one is in some way perceived as wrongly managed. This is sometimes considered a disadvantage, having to manage not only one code base, but two • No per-copy fees can be asked for modified versions, and anyone can use the current code base to start new projects • It provides a new forum for democratic action.

Disadvantages of Open Source LMS • Probably the most common problem encountered is the lack of familiarity of the IT and instructional staff with open source solutions. • Sometimes the technical staff has a steep learning curve before they can install and operate open source operating systems. • Open source systems do not necessarily have free technical support. Some vendors provide full integration support for a fee. • No formal training and certification for many proprietary network systems is usually available. • IT staff are frequently self taught and sometimes this means only a few are able to operate the open source systems

  7. Conclusions • we decided on open source LMS because • cost effective • no single entity on which the future of the software • can be designed according to our own needs
