ICDS – Integrated Child Development Services • ICDS - Foremost symbol of India’s commitment to her children • The world’s largest and most unique program of early childhood development with over a million Anganwadi centers • AWC-spread over 6,070 projects and 10,13,429 Anganwadi Centers in the country

Objectives of ICDS • Improve nutritional & health status of children 0-6 years • Lay foundation for early development and learning • Promote Early Childhood Care and Education to improve school enrolment and retention • Reduce incidence of malnutrition, morbidity & mortality • Enhance capability of the mother to look after the health, nutritional and development needs of the child, through family care and community empowerment approaches • Achieve effective coordination of policy and implementation among various departments to promote child development

ICDS – The Paradigm Shift • Greater focus on reaching the more crucial and vulnerable younger child (prenatal-Under 3s) and mothers • Extending from AW centre based to family care and community based empowerment approaches • Flexi Untied funds at AWC/Project/district levels-local initiative/other innovations • Child friendly Anganwadis

Under 3s- Fixed monthly mother -child days -linked to NRHM monthly Village Health and Nutrition Days 3-6 yrs- Fixed monthly “Anganwadi Diwas” all AWCs, for improved inclusive early learning outcomes- linked to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Creation of locally contributed AWC toy banks and activity corners Convergent action with other flagship programmes National Rural Health Mission Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Total Sanitation Campaign ICDS – The Paradigm Shift

  13. ICDS – The Paradigm Shift • Enhanced technical, managerial support for AWCs • Priority to early childhood education • Anganwadis on demand • Web enabled monitoring and evaluation • Accreditation of AWCs • Focus on quality of services • Public Private partnerships

  14. Proposed Areas for Strengthening Inter-Sectoral convergence • Strengthening of mechanism to ensure immunisation of beneficiaries under ICDS Scheme. AnganwadiCentres may be used as base for immunisation. • Providing of incentives to Anganwadi Workers at par with ASHA/ANM as they are also associated with Strengthening and Monitoring of Institutional deliveries. • Anganwadi Centre to serve as depot holder for drugs like Vitamin A, IFA tablets, Medicine kits , Contraceptives.

  15. Proposed Areas for Strengthening Inter-Sectoral convergence • Mosquito nets may also be supplied to AnganwadiCentres for distribution by ASHA to Pregnant Women & Lactating Mothers. • Joint Training of AWW/ASHA/ANM for up gradation of their skills in Nutrition and Health Education.
