Paraphrasing, quoting, summarizing (St. Martin’s Ch.13) • Super important quick help box p.277 • Quote • Paraphrase • Summarize • Signal words p. 279 • These words provide context for your quotes • Context is crucial to BA5 (and integrating quotes in all university-level work) • Make sure your source material doesn’t overshadow your own voice! P.285

BA5 Description • Write your working thesis at the top of the assignment • Select a minimum of five quotations from the article that you plan to incorporate into your draft as examples of particular rhetorical devices • Write a brief assessment of why each quotation would be useful to you in composing your draft.

BA5 Description cot’d • Your assessment of each quotation should include your answers to the following questions: • Where will this quotation fit in your organization? • How does it demonstrate the points you are trying to make about the author's writing? • Will you use it as a quotation or paraphrase the selection, and why? • Your analysis, not counting the quotations, should be 500-650  words (roughly 100 words for each quote)

  6. BA5 note You may find that in identifying and evaluating your quotations, you modify and improve your original thesis statement!

  7. Small Groups • Form a group of 3-4 people • Formulate a thesis for a rhetorical analysis of Ebert’s review • Support that thesis with four quotes from the review • Answer questions in assignment description • Where will this quotation fit in your organization? • How does it demonstrate the points you are trying to make about the author's writing? • Will you use it as a quotation or paraphrase the selection, and why?
