  2. *Child Hood* Oprah was born into poverty in rural Mississippi to a teenage single mother and later raised in an inner-city Milwaukee neighborhood. She experienced a lot of hard times during her childhood, including being raped at the age of nine and becoming pregnant at 14. Her son died in infancy. Sent to live with her father, a barber in Tennessee, she landed a job in radio while still in high school and began co-anchoring the local evening news at the age of 19. Her emotional ad-lib delivery eventually got her transferred to the daytime talk show arena, and after boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place she launched her own production.

  3. *Child Hood 2* She became an honors student, was voted Most Popular Girl, joined her high school speech team at East Nashville High School, placing second in the nation in dramatic interpretation. She won an oratory contest, which secured her a full scholarship to Tennessee State University, a historically black institution, where she studied communication. Her first job as a teenager was working at a local grocery store. At age 17, Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant. She also attracted the attention of the local black radio station, WVOL, which hired her to do the news part-time. She worked there during her senior year of high school, and again while in her first two years of college.

  4. *Show Time* In 1983, Oprah relocated to Chicago to host WLS-TV's low-rated half-hour morning talk show, AM Chicago. The first episode aired on January 2, 1984. Within months after she took over, the show went from last place in the ratings to the highest rated talk show in Chicago. The movie critic Roger Ebert persuaded her to sign a syndication deal with King World. Ebert predicted that she would generate 40 times as much revenue as his television show, At the Movies. It was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show. It expanded to a full hour, and broadcast nationally beginning September 8, 1986.

  5. *Show Time 2* In the early years of The Oprah Winfrey Show, the program was classified as a tabloid talk show. In the mid 1990s Winfrey then adopted a less tabloid-oriented format, hosting shows on broader topics such as heart disease, geopolitics, spirituality and meditation and interviewing celebrities on social issues they were directly involved with, such as cancer, charity work, or substance abuse. Her final show is scheduled to air in September 2011. As well as hosting and appearing on television shows, Winfrey co-founded the women's cable television network Oxygen. She is also the president of Harpo Productions. On January 15, 2008, Winfrey and Discovery Communications announced plans to change Discovery Health Channel into a new channel called OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. It was scheduled to launch in 2009, but is now due to launch on January 1, 2011.

  6. *Movies* Oprah was in a couple of movies like, “The Color Purple", and “Beloved.” She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was the Voice of Gussie the Goose in “Charlotte Webs”, and the voice of Judge Bumbleden in “Bee Movie.” She also did the voice for the character of Eudora, the mother of Princess Tiana in “The Princess and The Frog.”

  7. *Magazine* Oprah founded O:The Oprah Magazine. It was first published on April 19, 2000. As of June 2004, its average paid circulation was over 2.7 million copies, two thirds by subscription. A South African edition was first published in April 2002; according to the South African Advertising Research Foundation, its average readership was over 300,000.

  8. *History* Oprah went from being raised in poverty, to becoming the richest women alive. She never let her hardships get in the way of perusing her dreams. She has helped a lot of people in the 25 years she has been on television. She has made an all girls school in Africa, gave away cars, all kinds products, jewelry, etc. to her audience. She has been a tremendous roe-model to all the young girls who have been sexually abused and feel like they have no way out.

  9. *Accomplishments* • In the year 1972, Oprah Winfrey won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant and started working with a local black radio station WVOL as a news presenter. • In the year 1973 Oprah graduated from Tennessee State University with a degree in Speech and Performing Arts and became the first black TV news anchor reporter with WTVF-TV. • In 1983, Oprah moved to Chicago to host WLS-TV's low-rated half-hour morning talk-show, AM Chicago and within months after Oprah took over, the show went on to become the highest rated talk show in Chicago and was renamed as "The Oprah Winfrey Show". • In the year 1987, Oprah won her first Emmy award for best talk/service show host and best show. • Oprah received the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Entertainer of the year award in 1989. • Oprah testified before the US congress and initiated the National Child Protection Act in 1991. • In 1995 Oprah not only won an Emmy for Best Talk Show and Best Host for the second year in a row but also kick started Oprah Online on AOL (American Online) in partnership with ABC. Oprah became the first woman and the only black on Forbes list of 400 richest Americans in the same year.
