It is the hard work of redeploying and the transformation of the social system

Mentoring • Students who meet regularly with their mentors are 52% less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class (Public/Private Ventures study of Big Brothers Big Sisters). • Youth who meet regularly with their mentors are 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to start drinking (Public/Private Ventures study of Big Brothers Big Sisters).

  4. Sioux Falls • There are 65 different languages spoken in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (the Multi-Cultural Center of Sioux Falls). • In 2006 Lutheran Social Services of Sioux Falls performed 233 Refugee Resettlements (LSS).

There are approximately 800 homeless people in Sioux Falls. • Of those, more than one third are children. • 98 adults and 15 children said they were living outdoors. • Twenty-nine percent said they were working - but didn't make enough to cover housing and other needs. • The Sioux Falls Housing and Redevelopment Commission has 2,290 people on a waiting list for help with housing.

  6. U.S.A. • 30 million Americans live below the official poverty line, with a disproportionate percentage of these being African-American and Hispanics. • 1 in 3 people live below the poverty line in Detroit, Michigan. Detroit is the nation’s poorest big city.

  8. Women • In China, one woman kills herself every four minutes (BBC News). • Approximately 1,700 women per year are trafficked into Japan from Latin America and Caribbean countries (U.S. report on slavery 2006).

  9. Modern-Day Slavery • There are an estimated 27 million slaves in the world today, more than at any time in human history (freetheslaves.net).

Children • 1.2 million children are believed to be trafficked every year (International Labour Organization). • 95% of the world’s AIDS orphans live in Africa (UNAIDS). • At least 9,000 babies are abandoned every year in Romania (UNICEF). • Two of the main causes for child trafficking are poverty and lack of education (UNICEF). • Zambia has the world’s highest AIDS-orphan rate (the most orphans left after 1 or both of their parents have died of AIDS) (IJM).

In fighting in the Dominican Republic of the Congo, 40% of the soldiers engaged in armed conflict are children, 40% of these children are girls (Amnesty International). • Some 2 million children are exploited in the global commercial sex trade, also known as child sex tourism. (U.S. report on slavery 2006). • Fighting in northern Uganda since 2003 has seen 25,000 children abducted by the LRA, a rebel force, for use as soldiers, sex slaves, and porters. 7,500 of these children are girls (Amnesty International). • More than 300,000 children under 18 are currently being exploited in more than 30 armed conflicts worldwide (UNICEF).

Aids • AIDS kills some 6,000 people each day in Africa, more than wars, famine, and floods (BBC News). • Swaziland has the highest percentage of HIV positive people in the world with nearly 39% of those between the ages of 15 and 49 living with HIV (UNICEF). • In Swaziland 1 in 5 people are infected with HIV (UNICEF). • In Swaziland, 70,000 children have been orphaned by HIV (UNICEF).

  15. Hunger • 300 million children go to bed hungry every night • Every day Americans spend 1 Billion dollars dining out.

  16. Building Churches • In Sioux Falls churches have spent over 18 million in the last 2 years constructing new buildings and additions (this does not include the purchase of land)
