How adjectives work in Spanish By Jack Cameron
General Information • Adjectival agreement – Masculine nouns must be followed by masculine adjectives and the same with feminine nouns. • Adjectives must also be agreed when a singular or plural noun is used. If plural you must add a certain ending. • Adjective is always placed after the noun. E.gBlue trousers = Pantalonesazul. • Adjectives can be used in the superlative form which is the most and the least. • Adjectives can also be used by saying ‘more’ (más) and ‘less’. (menos)
Examples of adjectives used with clothes A stripy jumper = Un jersey de rayas A leather jacket = Unachaquetade cuero A printed skirt = Unafaldaestampada High–Heeled shoes = Unoszapatosde racón alto This dress is ugly = Este vestidoesfeo This jacket is pretty = Estachaquetaesbonita A grey skirt = Unafaldagris Blue jeans = Unos vaqueros azules
‘More than’ and ‘Less than’ The boots are moreexpensive than the shorts. = Las botas son máscarasquelos pantalonescortos. To use ‘More than’ you say a noun is more (más) than (que) then the adjective then finally the noun you are comparing. With less than you do the same but say ‘less’ (menos) instead of more. E.g The boots are less expensive than the shorts = Las botas son menoscarasque los pantalones.
Superlatives – The most/least In English, when we use superlatives we normally say the most/least or add ‘est’ to the end of the word. In Spanish the construction is similar to comparisons such as more than/ less than. Definite article + noun + más/menos + adjective + location = Superlative e.g John is the tallest boy in the class = Juan es el chicomás alto de la clase
Tasks • A stripy skirt = • Jack is the tallest boy in the class = 3. The jacket is more expensive than the jumper = 4. A printed jumper = 5. Josh is the smallest boy in the class = 6. The skirt is more expensive than the shirt =
