  1. Agenda for August 27, 2010 • Review “Dialogue: Punctuation Guide” handout with Powerpoint • Practice Sentences with Dialogue • Plot Pyramid (write in PENCIL) due MONDAY • Read silently

  2. To set off a speaker’s exact words, • Place quotation marks before and after the speaker’s exact words. • Use a capital letter at the beginning of the speaker’s sentence(s). • Use a comma to separate the quotation from the “tag.” • Marla said, “I’ve decided to become a firefighter.”

  3. How would you punctuate and capitalize this quotation? • a firefightersaid juancan help people in many ways

  4. How would you punctuate and capitalize this quotation? • “A firefighter,” said Juan, “can help people in many ways.”

  5. Always place periods and commas to the left of quotation marks. • “I don’t know,” said Lac. • Lac said, “I don’t know.”

  6. Place an exclamation point or a question mark inside the quotation marks when it punctuates the quotation. • Ms. Wiley asked, “Can you actually tour the Smithsonian on the Internet?” • Rachel yelled, “I am the winner!”

  7. Place an exclamation point or a question mark outside when it punctuates the main sentence. • Did I hear you say, “Now we can tour the Smithsonian on the Internet”?

  8. Did Cindy really tell her boss you are wrong?

  9. Place semicolons or colons outside quotation marks. • Jill remarked, “We have a problem”; she went on to give details.

  10. For a divided quotation, both parts are enclosed in quotation marks, and commas or other punctuation set the quoted words from the “tag.” • “Movies about aliens,” Jeff said, “are interesting.” (Notice the second half of the quoted sentence does not begin with a capital letter. • “Wow!” Olivia exclaimed. “Did you read the new book about UFOs yet?” (Notice that the second half is a complete sentence and IS capitalized.)

  11. Two sentences • “Will you go to the store for me?” asked Sue. “We really need a gallon of milk.” • Notice the each sentence is a complete thought.

  12. Dialogue… • Is a conversation between two or more speakers. In writing a dialogue, indicate a change in speaker by using a new paragraph and new set of quotation marks. “Dr. Turner,” the reporter asked, “do you believe in the existence of alien life?” “Yes, I believe it is possible intelligent life exists elsewhere,” the scientist replied.

  13. Indirect Quotation • “Mrs. Williams, are you selling your car?” asked Carl (Notice these are the exact words Carl said). • Carl asked Mrs. Williams if she were selling her car (Notice that this is a paraphrase of Carl’s words

  14. Okay, now let’s practice. • For each of the following sentences, add the correct quotation marks and punctuation. • layla asked are you going to the movies tonight

  15. Layla asked, “Are you going to the movies tonight?”

  16. I would like to go replied louis if I can find someone to go with me

  17. “I would like to go,” replied Louis, “if I can find someone to go with me.”

  18. i’ve been dying to see that new horror movie exclaimed layla

  19. “I’ve been dying to see that new horror movie!” exclaimed Layla.

  20. Louis yelled Yes then he proceeded to ask Layla if she would go out with him.

  21. Louis yelled, “Yes!”; then he proceeded to ask Layla if she would go out with him.
