  2. Examining the newborn • Apgar Scale – use to check the newborns physical condition • Performed 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth • Tests: Heart Rate, Breathing, Muscle Tone Responsiveness, Color

  3. Examinations continued • Baby is weighed • Baby is given an examination • Baby is weighed measured and cleaned • Footprints are taken, wrist and ankle bands attached

  4. Later Tests • Antiseptic ointment put into babies eyes • Vitamin K shot (to help blood clot) • Hearing test (in some hospitals) • Blood is drawn to test for PKU, Sickle cell anemia and other conditions

  5. Bonding and Attachment • Bonding: forming strong emotional ties • Babies are given to Mothers immediately after birth – placed on the abdomen (except with c-sections) • Babies feel and hear the mothers familiar heartbeat and voice. • Mom’s will be encouraged to breastfeed shortly after birth

  6. Hospital Stay • Some healthy Moms and babies will leave as early as 12hrs. After birth • C-Sections stay for a minimum of 3 days • Conditions such as Jaundice may prolong stay

  7. Rooming - In • Babies stay with Mom & Dad in hospital • Some hospitals have beds for dad • Hospitals can observe parents • Mom & Dad can practice caring for baby • Visiting Policies will vary

  8. Legal Documents • Birth Certificate • Issued by State of birth NOT hospital • Social Security Number

  9. Premature Babies • Premature: babies born before 37 weeks and weighing less then 5 pounds 8 oz. • Premature babies are given special care: • Babies are not ready not live outside mother. • Systems for controlling body tempurature, breathing and feeding are not mature. • Often placed in an incubator – an enclosed crib where the oxygen supply, tempurature, can be closely controlled.

  10. Postnatal Care of Mom • Rest • Exercise • Nutrition • Medical checkup • Emotional Support • Post-partum or baby blues
