  4. Reading test • This year the English reading booklet will not be linked to a theme. The booklet will contain three or four texts. The least demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in difficulty. The children will have one hour to read the texts and answer the questions. • There will be a range of questions from shorter, closed response items (such as multiple choice and matching) to longer, open response items that require children to explain and comment on texts to demonstrate a full understanding.

  5. Grammar Test • Introduced in 2013, to test pupil’s knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling. • Paper 1 (45 minutes) comprises 40-50 short answer questions assessing grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. • Paper 2 (around 15 mins) is a spelling task. 20 sentences are read aloud by the test administrator. Each sentence has a word missing which the child must complete.

  6. The Mathematics Test • Children are tested on all strands of the National curriculum, from number skills to problem solving, shape and space, measures and data handling. • This year Paper 1 and Paper 2 are non-calculator papers, each 45 minutes. • Mental maths – 20 minutes. The children hear 20 questions and are given either, 5, 10 or 15 seconds to answer them.

  7. Writing • Your child’s writing composition will be assessed by their teacher and will be a judgement of their work across Year 6. • Your child’s grammar, punctuation and spelling skills will be assessed as part of their writing.

  8. Level 6 Tests • These tests are designed to stretch those children who are working securely at level 5. • This year the percentage of the number of children at the end of KS2 achieving level 6 in a school will be shown in performance tables.

  9. How to support your child • Reassure them that they just have to try their best on the day. • Maintain a regular early bedtime routine, especially during test week!
