  17. MATHS vs MATHS LITERACY • Misnomer in title of subject • Maths Lit. is NOT watered down Maths • Maths Lit. is about using maths in real life – interpreting stats, interest rates etc. • Requires reading skill

  19. MATHS PAPER 3 • Optional • Applicants will not be disadvantaged • Learning area 4 (geometry) is of concern to some faculties • Advantage if they have • Recommended for maths achievers

  20. ADVANCED PROGRAMME MATHEMATICS • Separate assessment and certificate • Not part of APS i.e. will not replace existing NSC subject • HE institutions to incorporate aspects into their syllabi • Recommended for very able student who will do maths based degrees

  21. INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) & COMPUTERS APPLICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (CAT) • Cannot do both • IT requires higher order thinking skills, difficult, largely programming • CAT is largely Microsoft office suite i.e. Word, Excel, Powerpoint • CAT is non-designated subject

  22. SCIENCE AND ACCOUNTING • We can predict Science achievement by looking at the grade 9 maths mark • Science is not recommended unless maths is 60% • Accounting knowledge is also sequential and a Maths mark of 50% is recommended
