  1. God - of Providence “Forethought (pro, before, noeo, to think), is translated ‘providence’ in Acts 24:2 (foresight, NKJV); ‘provision’ in Rom. 13:14” (W.E. Vine). Neither is talking about God, but He acts providentially.

  2. God Works Today His work of creation is finished, Gen. 2:2,3; Heb. 4:4,10 His work is not finished, Jn. 5:17 Humanist Manifesto – “We can discover no divine purpose or providence for the human species. While there is much that we do not know, humans are responsible for what we are or will become. No deity will save us; we must save ourselves”

  3. General Providence All things consist (are upheld), Col. 1:17; Heb. 1:3 We speak of “laws of nature” – God governs by laws He ordained, but He may intervene and overrule those – if He desires. He may do so miraculously or providentially.

  4. Miraculous Manna God “rained bread from heaven” (Ex. 16:4) Gathered enough for one day – except on Friday (Ex. 16:14-24) Typical of another miraculous “bread” (Jn. 6:30-35,49,50)

  5. Miraculous - fire Elijah prayed for fire – “Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench” (1 Kgs. 18:38). The prophets of Baal could not produce fire, 1 Kgs. 18:21-29

  6. Births - Miraculous & Providential Birth of Jesus to a virgin, (a miracle) Mt. 1:23 – “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel, which is translated, God with us.” Birth of Samuel, (providential) 1 Sam. 1:10-20

  7. Healings - Miraculous & Providential Miraculous - The man born blind, Jn. 9:1-7 The lame man, Acts 3:1-8 Providential – prosperity and health, 3 Jn. 2

  8. Providential Acts in O.T. The ram Abram offered, Gen. 22:12-14 Joseph in Egypt, Gen. 45:5-8 Physical blessings, Dt. 11:13-17

  9. Providential Acts in N.T. Jesus taught us to “ask, seek and knock” (Mt. 7:7-11) Whatever He teaches us to ask for – He will listen and act as He wills Pray for open doors, Col. 4:2-4 Pray for rulers, 1 Tim. 2:1,2 Pray about personal plans, Jas. 4:13-15 Pray for wisdom, Jas. 1:5,6

  10. Conclusion Be careful about blaming God for consequences of selfish decisions. He doesn’t lead us to violate His will. May not know how He will give what we ask, find what we seek, or when the door will be opened to our knock It is our job to ask, seek and knock, and God’s to provide!
