Making the most out of your summer Professional Experiences Academic Experiences Summer Classes Online or in person Can help you graduate in four years Help knock out GenEd requirements to ease your business course load Note: Classes that you anticipate to be difficult should be taken during the regular semester (more resources/help available) • Shadow opportunities • Family friends, local companies, etc. • Low stress environment to learn • Experience professional communication • Might lead to internship later on ‘down the road’

Making the most out of your summer (Continued) Professional Experiences Academic Experiences Spend a day to “map out” the year ahead Classes, tutoring or studying times for the upcoming semester Ideal future class schedule needed to graduate Do it on the Football student ticket day – you’re already awake at 6am and pumped to get back • “Get a job” • Something to put on your resume to showcase numerous things • Talked about in interviews • You might learn something! • Customer service • Working with difficult people • Get paid (obviously)

Making the most out of your summer (Continued) Plan for your Fall internship/career search • Gather list of companies you would like to apply for • Bookmark/Organize their old job postings and contact information • Gets you familiar with the industry and firms, makes it easier to stay on top of it all • Write down your list of companies. Now double it. • Create your “Search Template” • Example: Applying for Financial Analyst and Investment Banking positions • Resume & Cover letter able to be personalized to firm and position • Create your cold-call emails • Ready to hit the ground running

Valuable Skills & Experiences • Stop reading the news, start understanding it • Historical books will give you insight as to why certain events matter • “This Time is Different” shows why super high levels of gov’t debt relative to GDP held by foreign institutions might lead to recessions (or does it?) • Different firms have books they make new employees read, so read them in advance! • Start to learn the industry mindset • Why would Ican buy Herbalife and Ackman short it? • Why did Target blame cold weather on their poor sales of spring merchandise?

Valuable Skills & Experiences (Continued) • Some certifications you can obtain now • Bloomberg (free in the library), FactSet Analyst Training for their “Certificate in Applied Financial Modeling” and Microsoft Office Specialist (~$100) • Demonstrates to employers that you have the drive to gain applicable skills before you start the job, and that you actually are proficient • Might relearn the stuff on the job, but you have a leg up • Plan for your Advanced Certifications • CFA: Three levels, 37%, 42% & 52% pass rate. ~14% completion rate. • FRM: Two levels, ~50% pass rate at both. • Series 3, 5, 6, 7, 15, 30, 31, 42, 44, 55, 56, 79, • Note:Some all of these require sponsorship/experience

Valuable Skills & Experiences (Continued) • Developing/Coding: • Kahn Academy for very basic understanding of the “language” • Lynda for thorough tutorials (free through WSoB?) • www.Excel-VBA-Easy.com • www.NetBeans.org (Java) • Demonstrates: • Willingness to learn (few of us are CompSci majors) • Ability to truly add value (automate some manual data analysis procedure) • Communicate with IT/Developers more clearly • Identify yourself as a problem solver who understands Finance • Makes your job easier and more secure
