  2. Relational Aggression (RA) • Coined by Dr. Nicki Crick early 1990’s • Boys=physical victimization (overt) • Girls=relational victimization (covert) • Definition=behavior that is intended to harm someone by damaging or manipulating his/her relationships with others

  3. RA cont. • 80% due to poor parenting & negative peer influence • Preschool • 25% students report teachers intervene, 71% teachers believe they always intervene • One every 3-6 minutes • Girls 10-17 arrested for aggravated assault doubled • 70% of girls have been mistreated by friends

  4. The QUEEN • Aggressor-hurts/damages relationship • She’s the BOSS • Charming • Revenge • Power/Control • Arrogant, materialistic, selfish, & superficial

  5. The SIDEKICK • 2nd to the Queen • Also be a VICTIM • Supports Queen • Mirror Image • The Queen is authority figure • Defends Queen

  6. The GOSSIP • Secretive • Good communicator • Seems to be friends with everyone • Actress • Don’t tell anyone I told you this but….”

  7. The Floater • Moves from clique to clique • Protective factors • Avoids conflicts • Higher self esteem bc sense of self not based on the one group • Does not want to socially exclude other girls • Not competitive • Some power not equal to the Queen

  8. The Bully • Defiant • Outspoken • Tough • Cruel to weaker people • Will use physical violence more than relational aggression

  9. The Bystander • Not aggressors or victims caught in between • Peacemaker • Hard time saying NO • Can not stand up to anyone

  10. The Wannabee • Will do anything to be part of the inner circle of the Queen • Gossiper/pleaser • Sense of belonging • Used by Queen

  11. The Target • Helpless • Excluded “Loser” • Isolated • Humiliated • Exposed & vulnerable • Change herself to fit in

Examples of Relational Aggression • Cyberbullying-Myspace, Facebook, Youtube • Three-way calling • Taunting • Exclusion • Verbal insults • Text messages • Emails • Chat rooms • Teasing • Spreading rumors • Gossip • Eye rolling • Intimidation • Ignoring • Videophones • Manipulative affection • IM

Long Term Effects of RA • Poor self esteem • Hopelessness • Inability to trust • Poor relational skills • Anger • Frustration • Gang involvement • Depression • Separation Anxiety • Interrupted Identity Formation • Teen pregnancy • Substance abuse • Self Injury • Eating Disorders • Suicidal Ideation • Delinquent Behavior • Homicidal Ideation • Poor academic performance • Stress/Anxiety
