The earliest fort in San Jorge Castle dates back to 1st century BC while the earliest human settlement dates to the 8th century. • San Jorge Castle initially served a strategic role as a fortification against Romans, Phoenicians, Moors, and Carthaginians. • Around the 12th century, the castle was used for serving military barracks, a royal palace, and was the residential area for the Tombo National Archive. • The castle hill was used firstly as a fortification by the Celtic tribes, by the Phoenicians, the Greeks, and lastly by the Carthaginians and later annexed successively by the Romans, the Visigoths, Moors, and the Suebi.
