EO Mission: Developing know-how in creating societal relevant satellite applications using low cost, open source tools and geo information technologies Int’l staff: 250 (>50 nationalities) Alumni network: >20,000 graduates worldwide (1950-onwards) Average # in-house students (MSc, PhD): 500,100 with >80 nationalities (10/09) Location: Enschede (NL) with partners in Europe, Africa, Latin America, Middle-east and Asia Annual budget: approx. 40.106 EUR

ITC Training & research opportunities • Special tailor-made training • On request of organizations, etc. • E.g. for CMA (Chinese Meteorological Administration) staff; 2009, 2010… • ITC e-learning GEONETCast courseware • (under development, expected on-line 2010) • Conference Workshops (Africa): get acquaintance with system • AARSE 2008 Conference, October 2008, Accra, Ghana • IEEE-IGARSS 2009 Conference, July 2009, Cape Town, SA • AfricaGIS 2009 Conference, October 2009, Kampala, Uganda • Nuffic (NL-funded) Refresher courses (2-wks) • Ghana Oct 2007, Rwanda Oct 2009, 2010?? irregular scheduling! • ITC GEONETCast regular MSc level Training Modules (June 2010; 3 or 6 wks) • Basic to intermediate RS knowledge level required • Degree training & research: ITC MSc training and PhD research programs • MSc taught + research part (118 ECTS; 18-20 months) • PhD research area Water Cycle & Climate or other SBA

Research & cooperation opportunities • GEONETCast & OS Systems use in externally funded Projects (on-going) • EU FP7 DEVCOCAST (EUROPE, SOUTH AMERICA users); see upcoming workshops in Africa and South America (Argentina, Brasil) -> VITO, JRC, ITC and partners • EU FP7 CEOP AEGIS (Tibetan Plateau, China, East Asia) -> TUD, ITC,…. • EU FP7 GEONETCab Capacity Building (Africa, Europe) -> ITC, IRD, CNES, CSIR,… • Development stage: • training support for EU AMESD -> EUMETSat, AU and Nat.Meteor.orgs • INPE collaboration through GEO CBC; open source; CBERS;… • .. • Establishment of User Network using existing and upcoming stations (setup with ITC support & training in GEONETCast Toolbox applications) • CGIS/NUR, Rwanda • RCMRD, Nairobi, Kenya • University Makerere, Kampala, Uganda, • UCT (University Cape Town), South Africa • IRD, Benin • IRA (Institut de Recherches Agronomiques), Medenine, Tunesia • More to come (i.e. Devcocast partners, etc.…)

Conclusions • Low cost data reception system is good alternative for EO user community in Africa, Asia, South America, e.g. academic institutions, environmental research institutes and national authorities for multitude of environmental applications; • Main bottleneck (real time import and analysis of data in GIS) almost solved and many near real time GEONETCast products, can be imported and processed; • For ITC mission, the free reception for research and education + freeware offers great potential for further capacity building and strengthening of R+D network in the world; • Many partner organizations are acquiring the infrastructure for collaboration and to deliver products for (near real time) environmental assessment for national (and international) organizations for better policy making.
