  4. Who is Ms. Hindes?

  5. What is MATH? • Think of some definitions

  6. Definitions: • math-e-mat-ics: The science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure. • math·e·mat·ics: The study of the measurement, properties, and relationships of quantities, using numbers and symbols. • Mathematics is a language.

  7. Quick Facts: • Mathematics is the ONLY language shared by ALL human beings, regardless of culture, religion or gender. • Ex. Adding a prices in a basket of groceries involves the same process. • Nobody is literate in all tongues, but math literacy is called numeracy and is shared across the universe.

  8. What is Geometry? A Little Bit of History

  9. The father of Geometry: Euclid

  10. Geometry • Geometry was thoroughly organized in about 300 BC. • The earliest recorded beginnings of geometry can be traced to cavemen, around 3000 BC. • Early geometry was a collection of empirically discovered principles concerning lengths, angles, areas, and volumes, which were developed to meet some practical need in surveying, construction, astronomy, and various crafts.

  11. ENGLISH DICTIONARY DEFINITION OF GEOMETRY ge·om·e·try (jee-om-i-tree) n. the branch of mathematics that deals with the deduction of the properties, measurement, and relationships of points, lines, angles, and figures in space from their defining conditions by means of certain assumed properties of space.

  12. Why learn Geometry? Careers today demand skills like, • Problem solving • Spatial Reasoning • Decision-making • Applying strategies Geometry provides a great grounding in these skills!
