  2. Introducing projects - CSU • Samsung Galaxy Tabs with Sprint data plans distributed to 2 sections of MTH 87 (approx. 40 students) • Lecture Sessions were Captured (Mimio Teach and Capture) • Students could Access Lectures on Tabs or computer • Group Board for virtual tutoring

Introducing projects - CUNY John Jay 19 students, 2 professors, and 1 teacher’s assistant received a Sprint device with Blackboard Mobile Learn installed for the 2011 Spring Semester 11 EVOs were distributed for a technology course instructed by Adam Wandt & 11 Galaxy Tablets for an art course instructed by Bill Pangburn

Student Profile - CSU • Deficient in Math • Unprepared for College • Only 40% of the students taking MTH 87 will pass the course • CSU is largely a commuter campus—students often work one or more jobs while attending • High Attrition rate, only 28% of low-income, first generation students graduate after 8 years

Student Profile - CUNY John Jay • John Jay College of Criminal Justice is an urban commuter campus of the City University of New York • Internationally recognized leader in criminal justice, John Jay is a major training facility for law enforcement and public service personnel • 15,000 + students at John Jay • Most students also often work while attending, many have families

  6. Goals - CSU • Create More interaction between Student and Content • Create More interaction between Student and Instructor • Create More interaction between Students • Better Success in MTH 87 • Higher Retention Rates

  8. Outcomes - CSU • Success Rate • Galaxy Tab Sections=53% • All Sections=37% • Attrition Rate • Galaxy Tab Sections=10% • All Sections=13.3%

I enjoy getting course information the same way I get all the other information in my life - via my smartphone.” – Kelly, John Jay • “Bb Mobile Learn allowed me to access course material from work, where my organization usually blocks outside websites.” – Joe • “Never before have I been able to have an entire course in my pocket.” – Adam, Professor, John Jay

  10. Mobile in the Classroom • Bb Mobile enters their world – meeting them, giving them a service on their level. • Should lead to greater retention and satisfaction. Better academic outcomes will be more than a fringe benefit – hits the pot of gold. • Where are we going from here?
