  12. Southern Agricultural Economy Cotton Boom Spreads Slavery The need for slaves increased greatly. Slavery flourished and became deeply entrenched in the Southern economy. Price of a Slave: 1802 - $600 1860 - $1,800 Number of Slaves: 1820 – 1.5 million 1860 – 4 million
