  2. PROJECT OVERVIEW You will be writing a story for children and creating illustrations for you story using Adobe Illustrator CS5.

  3. Elements in a good children’s story Your story must contain the following: • Character development which includes a description of the character’s physical and personality traits • One conflict that the character must overcome • A well-developed plot that moves quickly through the conflict towards a resolution • Your story will be written for a child at about the 2nd grade level. • It will be organized into simple sentences and short paragraphs with about 500 words • Implementation of vivid imagery such as sensory adjectives, active verbs, similes or metaphors and/or personification of an animal or object will keep the story vivid in your readers mind

  4. Character Development Your characters may include all or any of the following: Animals People (you and/or a classmate etc.) Fictional person (made-up superhero or a fairy etc.)

  5. Character Development Cont… Your characters must be indentifiable by dominant personality traits. These traits will be revealed by their actions and emotions. (Let the illustrations reveal the physical details.) Below are just a few examples of dominant personality traits: Dishonest Afraid Kind Wild Helpful Selfish Trustworthy Pessimistic Impatient Truthful Foolish Conceited Sneaky Argumentative Cruel Bossy Brave Rude Depressed Aggressive Messy Conceited Angry Caring Sneaky

  6. CONFLICT Once you have chosen character traits you are then ready to brainstorm possible conflicts that your character must overcome. You must choose one of the four types of conflicts. • Individual vs. individual • Individual vs. society • Individual vs. nature • Individual vs. self

  7. Some questions to consider when brainstorming your CONFLICT • What is the conflict? • What steps will the character take to deal with the conflict? • Is your conflict a relatable conflict that most children have faced before? • What will be the resolution to the conflict?

  8. Plot: events that move the story along….toward conflict resolution

  9. Plot Text Organization Guide Questions to consider regarding plot: Does the main character attempt more than one action in an attempt to resolve the conflict? Will the reader be drawn in by the plot and want to turn the page to find out what happens next? Will the reader care about what happens to the main character?
