A bit about my career • 1999-2003 Curriculum Manager (G7), Technology • 2003-2007 Programme Manager (G8), Technology • 2007-2008 Senior Manager, Curriculum & Qualifications (G8), Strategy Unit • 2008-2012 Senior Faculty Administrator (G9), HSC • 2012- Head of University Secretary’s Office (G9)

Who you know Or networking! • Important as more people know ‘who you are’ and what you’re interested in • Can’t get you a job but can increase your ‘personal brand’ • Make use of technology – LinkedIn, blogs etc • Make use of Professional Bodies – conferences, publications, regional/local events

  6. Professional Bodies • There are a number but the most important for us is the AUA: • Annual conference • OU events • Regional events • Write a paper for the journal • Become a trustee • Join the editorial board • Become a link co-ordinator • Get a travel award……

  7. Professional Bodies cont’d • Chartered Management Institute (CMI) • Association of Research Managers and Administrators (ARMA) • Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) • Public Management and Policy Association (PMPA) The list goes on!

  8. Career Mentoring • Inspirational • Honest • Builds self-esteem • Role model • Honest feedback • Understanding invisible rules • Challenges • Generous • Tailors advice • Builds personal relationship

Career Mentoring cont’d Key ideas to take away : • Have multiple mentors throughout your career • Consider people outside of the OU as well as inside • Go for someone in a senior position – if you’re a G7 this may mean a G9, if you’re a G8 this may mean someone on a high G10/head of unit • Male mentors provide more career development support

  10. Managing your ‘personal brand’ • What do people think of you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What three words would people use to ‘sum you up’? • Know what you want to be known for • Think about what you want to do next – what sort of person already does this? Can you use them as a role model? Are you a role model?

  11. Plan your career • No OU ‘career path’ so make your own • Know where you want to be in 1-year and in 5-years – and continually re-evaluate this • What do you enjoy doing? • Look at job adverts to see what roles exist, what they require and which ones you’d like to do • Reflect on your skills and experience – where are the shortfalls? Have a Professional Development Plan

  12. Plan your career cont’d • Discuss with your line manager – they can help you • Don’t be afraid to ask people in key roles for an hour of their time for career development chats – what’s the worst that can happen?

How to get ahead? • What have we learnt: • Work hard – nothing says more about your reputation than getting results • Do work no one else wants to do – that committee really does need servicing! Taking on work gets you noticed • Cultivate the people in charge – offer to help your line manager with a task, get yourself a mentor with seniority • Know what you want and go for it –know what skills you need to develop and move sideways if needed

How to get ahead cont’d • Promote yourself legitimately – as long as you’re promoting real achievements • Network with your peers – today you’re working together one day they might be on your interview panel • Make your own career – volunteer, be part of the HE administrator community, anything to help - it won’t just happen and sometimes you’ll have to take risks
