  1. All new text is shown in bold, italicized print. Opening processional draws our attention and readies us for the saving mysteries of our faith. The priest approaches the altarand reverences it with a kiss. The altar symbolizes Christ. The Sign of the Cross begins the Mass, invoking the Holy Trinity.

  2. Greeting – Sign of the Cross “And with your spirit” acknowledges the sacred duty of the priest. We confess to God and to each other that we are mindful that we are sinners in need of forgiveness.

  3. Confiteor – Penitential Act, Form A I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask Blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Close translation of the LatinMea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

  4. Confiteor – Penitential Act, Form B Priest concludes with Have mercy on us, forgive us our sins. This does not carry the same usages as the sacramental absolution of mortal sin.

  5. The Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of goodwill. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

  6. The Gloria…continued The new version of the Gloria is longer and is better written for music. The changes in the Gloria more closely follow the Latin version. The Gloria proclaims God’s infinite majesty and we sing of His marvelous grace.

  7. Liturgy of the Word God speaks to us through the Scriptures proclaimed in our midst. The Word of God is eternal. It speaks to all peoples of all generations. First Reading Second Reading Old Testament Writings from the Apostles PsalmGospel Placed between 1st and 2nd ReadingHomily

  8. Serving As A Bridge The second half of the Liturgy of the Word consists of the Homily, The Profession of Faith and the Prayers of the Faithful. These three “moments” in the Liturgy act as a bridge between the Liturgies of the Word and the Eucharist.

  9. Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

  10. Nicene Creed, cont’d. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

  11. Procession of Gifts The presentation by the lay-faithful of the bread and wine is reminiscent of the ancient Church where the gifts brought forward were from their homes. The gifts that “human hands have made” are brought forward with great faith that God may transform these early elements into heavenly masterpieces.

  12. Mingling The Church maintains the very ancient custom of mixing water and wine as it uniquely symbolizes what we pray for. We offer our lives in union with Christ. In all our weakness, in all our smallness, we pray to be inseparably united to the Divine. The small drops of water symbolize us. As the water becomes inseparably united to the wine, we pray we may become united to Jesus Christ. The Washing of the Hands The washing of the hands, “Lord wash away my iniquity and cleanse me of my sins.” Invitation to Prayer (Response) May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of His name, for our good and the good of all His holy Church.

  13. The Eucharistic Prayer is the center and summit of the entire Mass. Eucharist means thanksgiving. The Eucharistic Prayer is the celebration of thanksgiving and sanctification. The Mass offers fitting praise and worship of God as it places before His throne the sacrifice of His Son on the cross.

  14. The Preface begins “it is truly right and just.” With this dialogue the priest invites the entire community to join him in this prayer and unite themselves to Christ. Sanctus Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts Heaven and earth are full of your glory Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes In the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the Highest.

  15. The institution narrative quickly follows the Sanctus. The priest takes into his hands the bread and wine to be consecrated into the Body and Blood of Christ. These are the words of Christ himself: “This is my Body. This is the chalice of my Blood.”

  16. Mystery of Faith – Memorial Acclamation

  17. The “anamnesis” (memorial) of the Eucharist prayer calls to mind the Paschal Mystery – the passion, death, resurrection of our Lord. As the Paschal Mystery is made present to the Father, the Church, through the Holy Spirit, is united with Christ in His perfect sacrificial offering.

  18. The Communion Rite begins with the “Our Father,” and is the proximate preparation for the reception of the Body and Blood of Christ. The Our Father, and the Sign of Peace are all ordered to the reception of the Eucharist. Our Father Model prayer Asks pardon Praises the Father Avoidance of temptation Recognizes His Divinity Deliverance from evil

  19. The Sign of Peace The Lamb of God This testimony of the Baptism is our testimony immediately after the sign of peace. Agnus Dei – Invitation to Communion

  20. After the closing prayer is the Concluding Rite of the Mass. After the closing prayer beseeches God to give us grace to put our faith into practice, the concluding rite is “sending forth” on this mission as disciples of Christ. Concluding Rite
