  1. Metamorphic and Sedimentary Rocks

  2. What are they? • Rocks that change because of temperature and pressure or the presence of hot watery fluids • can form from igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks.

  3. What happens? • Heat and pressure can cause minerals to enlarge. • One kind of rock can change into many other kinds!

  4. For Example: • Shale --------- Slate

  5. Classifying • Foliated or nonfoliated • (VOCAB WORDS)

  6. Foliated? • When mineral grains line up in parallel layers

  7. Nonfoliated? • The mineral grains grow and rearrange, but they don’t form layers.

  8. 3 Question 1 What type of rocks can form from any type of rock? A. igneous B. intrusive C. metamorphic D. sedimentary

  9. 3 Answer The answer is C. Heat, pressure and hot fluids trigger changes in various rock types forming metamorphic rocks.

  10. 3 Question 2 Name the metamorphic rock texture in which mineral grains line up in parallel layers. A. foliated B. nonfoliated C. sedimentary D. volcanic

  11. 3 Answer The answer is A. Slate is a foliated metamorphic rock formed from shale.

  12. 3 Question 3 Which of these is a nonfoliated metamorphic rock? A. basalt B. marble C. shale D. slate

  13. 3 Answer The answer is B. Marble forms from limestone. Basalt is an igneous rock. Slate is a foliated metamorphic rock that forms from the sedimentary rock, shale.

  14. Sedimentary Rocks • Igneous rock is the most common on Earth. • Most of igneous is under ground. • About 75% of the rocks exposed on Earth’s surface is sedimentary.

  15. What is it? • Vocab Review: Sedimentsare loose materials such as rock fragments, mineral grains, and bits of shell that have been moved by wind, water, ice, or gravity. • Sedimentary rock forms when sediments are pressed and cemented together, or when minerals form from solutions.

  16. Superposition • What is superposition?

  17. What do you think? • What materials can sedimentary rocks be made from? • Can remains from other plants and animals be turned into sedimentary rock?

  18. Classifying • Detritol – “detritus” means to tear away. • What do you think will cause these kind? • Chemical-form when dissolved minerals come out of solution. • Organic-Rocks made of the remains of once-living things.
