  2. Different types of waves Mechanical waves: A disturbance that moves through a medium.(E.g. sound waves) Electromagnetic waves: A disturbance that moves through a vacuum.(E.g. light waves)

  3. More examples… Mechanical: Ripples in a pond, a person talking, speakers blaring music, Someone waving a flag. Electromagnetic: an electromagnet picking up metal, X-rays, radio waves.

  4. Parts of a wave Wavelength: the distance from one Amplitude: distance from the trough to the center or the crest to the center of the wave Trough: the bottom of the wave Crest: the top of the wave

  5. Longitudinal and transverse waves In a longitudinal wave the particle displacement is parallel to the direction of wave propagation. In a transverse wave the particle displacement is perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation.
