  2. Standards • MCC.K.G.2. Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. • MCCK.OA.1 Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds (e.g., claps), acting out situations, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations. • MCCK.OA.4 For any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record the answer with a drawing or equation.

  3. What is a Math Trail? Students, Today you will be going on a math trail. A math trail is like a treasure hunt. We will be solving clues during our math trail. Today, all of our clues will be about shapes, addition, and subtraction. GOOD LUCK!

  4. Getting Started There is a large rectangle in the front of our room. It’s the door! Take your treasure map, a pencil, and a clip board to our classroom door to find your first clue!

  5. Clue #1 (on the door) Solve the following problem: • + 3 = _________ Show your work. Take that many steps down the hall. Find a large circle. Write down what circle you find, and complete the next clue.

  6. Clue #2 (under the clock) What circle did you find? Draw 3 circles + 4 circles on your paper. How many circles did you get? Continue Walking down the hallway, and pass that many doors to get to your next clue.

  7. Clue #3 (next to door #7) We walk on squares everyday that we come to school. What squares can you find that we walk on everyday? Solve: • - 2 = _______ Walk that many squares, turn left, then walk that many squares again to find your next clue.

  8. Clue #4 (next to picture of ice cream cone) Ms. Howard LOVES ice cream. Her favorite is vanilla ice cream in a waffle cone. What shape did Ms. Howard use to make the ice cream cone on the wall? Clap 5 times. Clap 5 more times. How many times did you clap? Walk that many steps, turn right, walk that many steps again, then stop when you see a big X.

  9. Wrap up (next to big X – next to library) Congratulations! You found our magical destination, the Library! Before we can go in, I want you to answer one more question. Why do you think it is important to learn about shapes, addition, and subtraction? Once you have recorded your answer, hand in your treasure map, then you may check out books. Please hold on to your clip boards and pencil until we get back to the classroom.
