Scholarly Publishing in Greece (2): landscape • Mainly published in international journal titles • Publishing in Greek language and titles: • language limitations, audience & market size • until recently focus on social & political sciences, economy, literature, arts & culture • Now days it’s a bit more attractive for researchers to publish in Greek e-publications (can communicate their works to a wider audience) • The last 5 years : significant increase in e-publishing activity which followed up the fast development and success of Institutional Repositories • Books: Exclusively print format • At the end of 2009 only 3 publishers with initiatives on e-books were reported - On May 2010 this number raised to 16! PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin • Current major players in Digital publishing & OA: societies and academic institutions • Academic Institutions were pioneers in OA with IRs and Digital Collections • Private publishers e-publishing focus mainly in medicine and law - OA: It’s not an issue for them yet! • Main funding sources for OA : public funding and sponsoring • Secondary sources: membership and ads for societies • On the other hand subscriptions for Scholarly Journals is not a considerable income (maybe with the exception of some medicine and law titles)

The University of Patras/LIC – OJS “special” case (2) • OJS could fulfill our requirements but “…need for easy indexing/cataloging procedure…”? • Need for customization • Version 2.1.1.0 (!) • Implemented a “cataloging” web form • With appropriate changes in code • Skip editorial procedures • Modification of database • Creation pdf files from image files • We created a short of propriety “OJS-archiving system” • Unfortunately NOT a plug-in!!   24. Future developments/Trends(1) • OJS is used widely as well as other custom applications. More use, investment and development on OJS is expected in the short term • A lot of OA e-publishing projects by academic libraries have been approved by government for the next 3 years • It is expected that more than 40 journals published by Academic institutions and scientific societies will be published through OJS platforms run by libraries • A lot of customization and new tools are also expected to be developed, but it is uncertain what portion of this work would be disseminated to the community due to the implementation framework of these projects (e.g. tenders for private sector to provide OJS as a service to libraries !!!!) 5th UNICA Scholarly Communication Seminar, 7-9 November 2010, Lisbon

Future developments/Trends(2) • OJS customization needs: • Upatras-LIC is especially interested in • Authorities, e.g. author names for retrospective indexing • Fast article submission form e.g. for “editors”/catalogers for massive/easy import of articles, skipping all or selected editorial procedures if needed • Also annotation, commends & other web 2.0 features… • Examine potential ways for contribution through PKP European network PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin

Conclusions (1) • E-publishing & OA have gained significant reputation and acceptance the last years in Greece • Main barriers to further improvement • Funding/Supporting Gold OA publications • Due to the crisis is seems quite unlikely to achieve some improvement on that! • Greek market size & language limitations • Current academic & research evaluation system and procedures (e.g. number of citations, publications to high impact factor journals • Lack of national and/or institutional OA policies • Need for more initiatives in digitization and indexing of back files, old journals etc 5th UNICA Scholarly Communication Seminar, 7-9 November 2010, Lisbon

  27. Conclusions (2) • Need for more automation and standardization in e-publishing procedures • More work needed • on policies issues • on advocacy and lobbying for OA inside the scholar community and funding bodies • budget re-allocation towards OA (e.g. OA author fees) • to use crisis as an opportunity to promote OA • While at the same time we need to apply sustainable business models for OA journals • Academic libraries keep a key role in OA as well as in scholarly communication issues (and publishing!) in Greece PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
