  11. Article 16Bloggers Against Torture • Technology - cell phones with cameras in them and online blogs - have blown wide open the world of abuse and torture in countries like Egypt. Blogs are being used more and more in developing countries as an advocacy tool and as an alternate source of news. The people of Egypt have tolerated torture and abuse by the police for years. The police use these tactics as a show of power, strength, and bravado. The bloggers are using their technology to bring these atrocities to light and let the rest of the world see what is happening in Egypt.

  12. Blogging has become an outlet for voiceless masses to speak out and be heard across the globe. In a male-dominated society, women have been able to use this technology to their advantage and now have an outlet for voicing their opinions. Bloggers get under the skin of the authorities by using their forums to back people trying to change the status quo. Blogging has emerged as an extension of existing popular movements. However, the bloggers are taking huge risks. Many have themselves become the subjects of arrest and torture for voicing their opinions.

  13. The Egyptian government has grown wary of their citizens' use of the Internet. For most people, Internet cafes are the only way they can get online. The government gives the owners of these establishments lists of people who are not permitted to get on line and cafe-goers are not permitted to go to politically or sexually oriented sites. State security officers routinely follow, harass and intimidate active political bloggers.

  14. What impact are these few Egyptian bloggers having? Could they really change a nation? Did these bloggers help to whip the Egyptian people into the frenzy that we're now seeing on the news? They are affecting popular opinion in other Arab nations like Libya, Tunisia, and Yemen. Surrounding countries are watching anxiously to see what happens next in Egypt. Bloggers and tweeters have been such a threat that President Mubarak shut down all access to the Internet during the riots over the last few days. Blogs seem to be a new, powerful tool in helping oppressed people organize and stand up against their oppressors and bring the rest of the world into the mix by opening once-closed doors and giving the rest of the world a wake up call in exposing the corruption and violence that they've been forced to live with for far too long in silence.
