Terminology • Intellectual Technologies – Tools that extend our mental rather than our physical capacities, i.e. Google • Algorithm – step by step procedure of how things work • Micro-coordinating – new communication phenomenon in which people are planning, organizing, coordinating, and changing plans because of their constant cyberconnections • Digital Tribalism – the process of people seeking out those with whom they share interests and values. It is a strong social practice, but it can also hinder the significance of diversity in society. • Avatars – virtual images that represent your identity, or your idealized version of yourself • HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) – a standardized system for tagging text files to achieve font, color, graphic, and hyperlink effects on World Wide Web pages. • MMORPGs (Massively multiplayer online role-playing games) – an online role-playing video game in which a very large number of people participate simultaneously. • Social Networking – sites that connect people from across the world to one another in an instant, without the need of actually seeing them
Is Google Making Us Stupid? • Media supplies thought and shapes the process of thought • Internet takes away capacity of concentration and contemplation • The more people use the web, the more they have to work when they concentrate • Research reporting that people are going for easy and short things to read • The Brain can reprogram itself and create new links • People thought their brains resembled clockwork, but now they resemble computers
The End of Solitude • Computer creating a culture of connectivity • People want to be noticed, so they go towards social networks • Technology takes away our ability of being alone • Not many people pursue solitude, only a select few pursue it • Kids say they have no time for intimacy nor the time for solitude
Relationships, Community and Identity in the New Virtual Society • Discusses how this new virtual society we live in is changing the way relationships are formed and carried out • Business can utilize this new virtual world by providing services and products which will supplement the feel of these online relationships • This generation is feeling closer to their families because of virtual connections • Virtual relationships pose a challenge for employers who deal with human resources, financial services, benefits, etc. • People are planning out their lives and finding others like them based on these online relationships • Virtual identities allow people to create an ideal self, sometimes even multiple selves
Generational Myth: Not all Young People Are Tech-Savvy • The idea of a “digital generation” is a myth • Advanced technology use gets much attention, while traditional education is overlooked • People of wealth get to express their opinions and preferences, and therefor society reflects those choices • Generations should be based more on events than on demographics • Being placed into a concrete “generation” gives people a sense of identity and belonging • Technology is not a single issue regarding today’s youth
Expressing My Inner Gnome: Appearance and Behavior in Virtual Worlds • Studied made to see if Avatars had impacted Social Behavior • Attractive looking people tend to dominate social interactions. i.e. sharing personal info or getting closer to them • Wanted to know if attractive avatars had the same affect as attractive people • The studies made were proven to show that attractiveness was true • Other studies were made saying that people with taller avatars were more confident than shorter avatars
