  3. What is Active Listening? • Find the Main Idea • Focus on Structure • Listen for Tone & Attitude • Pay Attention to Transitions

  4. 1. Find the Main Idea Lectures: Main Idea will be at the beginning Conversation: Purpose will be in first sentences for each speaker

  5. 2. Focus on Structure: Lecture Compare / Contrast listen for: several theories; possible explanations; many views… Cause & Effect listen for: why would this happen?; what’s the reason for...? Abstract Category with Examples listen for: one approach; one theory… Sequences listen for: development; stages; process

  6. 2. Focus on Structure: Conversation Problem & Solution listen for: problem; issue; difficulty… Service Encounter listen for: requirement; recommendation; prohibited; form; application… Significant Event listen for: have you heard?; Did you see?

  7. 3. Listen for Tone & Attitude:Lecture Objective: facts Subjective: convincing Compare/Contrast; Cause & Effect Inquisitive: classroom discussion

  8. 3. Listen for Tone & Attitude:Conversation Excited: significant event Disappointed / Upset: problem / solution Uncertain / Confused: service encounters

  9. 4. Focus on Transitions Reversals: abrupt changes requires CLOSE listening “um…”; “well, I’ll get back to that…” Negations: confirmation requires contextual understanding “I don’t have to explain that, RIGHT?”

  10. Final Tips Extreme Answers are usually INCORRECT always; impossible; only; none; every Lectures are STRAIGHT-FORWARD follow a reading structure
