  2. Task 1 Independent Description Expository Response

  3. Task 1 - General • 2 types of description • A noun of personal importance • Ex. – Describe a place that is important to you. • The ideal qualities of a noun • Ex. – Describe the qualities of a good parent • Expository response – explain and describe • Support with details from your own experience and knowledge • After you read the question, you have 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to respond

  4. Strategy 1 – Prepare to describe a variety of nouns

  5. Strategy 2 – Be specific • The prompt for task 1 is purposefully vague. It is expected that you focus the response yourself. • Ex. – Describe a holiday that is important to you. During this holiday, no one works or goes to school. I try to relax and also to visit my family and friends. I always sleep on a day off. Normally I wake up early for school, so on this day I sleep longer. What is wrong with this response?

  6. Strategy 3- Organize your ideas • First sentence should be your thesis / main idea • 2-3 traits with specific details to support • Organize outline quickly • Ex. – Hllwn • Scary – mov , dec, h house • Fun – trick or treat w friends, prty, games • Cost – Ms. Piggy

  7. Strategy 4 – Use concrete detail • My friend Bill is a patient and kind man. This is why I like him so much. His patience makes him a good friend because patient people are comfortable. Also, he is kind. Kind means nice and I like nice people. Kindness is an important quality. • My friend Bill is a patient and kind man. This is why I like him so much. Whenever we go somewhere, like the movies, he never worries about being late and never asks me to hurry up or to ignore anything. One time Bill stood calmly by the door while I looked frantically for my car keys. I threw books and cushions in the air, and Bill never complained. His patience makes him a good friend and also his kindness.

  8. Strategy 5 – Describe more than appearance when appropriate

  9. Strategy 6 – Use actions and events as supporting details • My old basketball coach from high school was very supportive, and that’s why I liked her so much. I mean, she supported us a lot. We always got a lot of help from her and this made her a good teacher. • My old basketball coach from high school was very supportive, and that’s why I liked her so much. She supported us a lot. For example, she would always comment on our throwing or ball handling. If we missed the net a lot, she demonstrated techniques and worked with each player. When I first started, I was terrible at defense, but she taught me how to block shots and steal the ball. Also, she gave us emotional support. My friend’s parents died during our last year, and the coach talked and listened to my friend.

  10. Strategy 7 – Metaphors and Similes • Using metaphors and similes can express a complicated, complex idea in a concise way • Ex. – My sister is an angel. I was drowning in homework. It smells like old garbage. It smells like flowers booming in spring.

  11. Strategy 8 – Explain the noun’s importance or your choice of characteristics. • My friend Bill is a very tall man and also very funny. He has to buy his clothes at a special store because most stores don’t have his size. Sometimes he even hits his head on the ceiling. Also, he tells a lot of jokes. He makes people laugh and always has funny stories. Bill has a great sense of humor. • My friend Bill is important to me because of his patience and generosity. First, Bill is always patient. He almost never gets angry and has saved the day more than once. One time, while we were camping, we had difficulty putting up our tent. Bill never got frustrated and he managed to finish just before the sun set. That was a close call! Also, Bill is very generous. For example, he bought the tent we used to go camping and he never asked me to pay him back. Bill’s qualities make him a great friend and I’ll always want him in my life.

  12. Strategy 9 – Be logical but subjective Objective Subjective • I enjoy volleyball because the cardiovascular exercise reduces the chances of a heart attack. • This response may be true but is unnecessarily impersonal. • I enjoy volleyball because it is a group activity and a non-contact sport. • This response shows your personality of preferring group activities and non-contact sports.
