  1. Matthew 9:9-13 • Matthew’s (Levi’s) call to to discipleship • What’s his name? • See parallels (Mk 2:13, Lk 5:27) • Our new name (Rev 2:17) • Who were the tax collectors? • What is a disciple (mathetes)? • Follows teaching (Jn 8:31) AND teacher (Lk 14:33) • Did Matthew forsake all? (See Lk 5:28) • Every True Christian is a disciple (Acts 14:21)

  2. Matthew 9:9-13 (Cont’d) • Party time!! • Matthew’s Evangelism Party • See parallel (Lk 5:29) • A target of the Pharisees • Men of God were always a target: Matt 11:18-19 • The scribes of the Pharisees (Lk 5:30, Acts 23:9) • Jesus’ Response • Physician illustration • Old Testament lesson: Hosea 6:6-7 • The “self proclaimed” righteous (Rom 3:10)

  3. Matthew 9:14 -17 • Why aren’t they fasting??? • The diligent fasters • See parallel (Lk 5:33) • Do rituals as such earn you salvation? (Lk 18:9-15) • The Jewish conception of fasting • “mourning”? (compare to Lk 5:34) • Joel 2:12, Ezra 8:21 • A new order of things • Wineskins and fermentation • The new (grace) vs. the old (law)

  4. Group 1 - Discipleship • Read Mark 8:34-37. How is self denial critical to faith? • Matthew held a big reception and invited many unsaved tax collector friends. What does this say about the zeal for evangelism a convert should exemplify? • Group 2 – Fasting • Read Isaiah 58:5-7. Describe what God wanted more than showy fasting. Did Jesus and His disciples do this? • How would you witness to a “religious” person who is trusting in ritual rather than faith (Eph 2:8-9)? • Group 3 – The new wine • Read Isa 65:8-9. Who is the new wine? • What are some examples of putting new wine in an old skin (i.e. mixing grace and law)? (Rom 11:6, Gal 4:9-11, 5:2-5) • Group 4 – The friend of sinners • Why did Jesus reach out to the tax collectors, prostitutes, and poor rather than the religious and rich? (James 4:6, Lk 18:22-24) • Read James 4:4. How do you differentiate the friendship Jesus had with sinners versus friendship with the world?
