  3. Shots • Shots could mean lots of different things. • In this article it is about the kind of shot you would receive at a doctor’s office.

Think-Pair-Share • Think about how the shot in the science-fiction video was different from shots you’ve received at the doctor’s office. • Turn to a partner and talk about the differences between the shot in the video and the shots you’ve received. • Share an experience with your partner about getting a shot.

A long time ago, shots may have been different then how they are. They might look different or even feel different. • Turn to a NEW partner and talk about how shots may change in the FUTURE. How do you think they might change? What might be different about the shots in the future? • Share one idea you and your partner talked about with the class.

What are shots used for anyway? • Let’s make a list of some of the ways doctors use shots. • Some shots prevent sicknesses and help build an immunity to the sickness before it happens- like the flu, measles, chicken pox, whooping cough. • Some shots inject medicine for pain relief, or control of pain (steroids, morphine, etc.) • Some shots are used to change the way people look (Botox, collagen) • Some shots keep us healthy (insulin, allergy shots, etc.) • Can you think of any other uses?

  8. Before we read…We should learn a few vocabulary words • Micro- a word part meaning small. Ex: microscope, micro-scale, micro-injector • Derma- a word part meaning skin. Ex: epidermis, dermatology, hypodermic • Hypo- a word part meaning below or under.
