  2. What is a catastrophic event? • Sudden, usually naturally occurring situations where change and destruction occur. • Some are man made, some are caused by nature.

  3. 3 Groups of Catastrophic Events • Weather event: hurricane, tornado, flood • Geological Event: volcano, earthquake, tsunami • Human Error: wildfires

  4. Catastrophic Events • All catastrophic events are the Earth’s way of maintaining equilibrium during change.

  5. Earthquakes Features: Strong vibrations. Formed: Earth’s surface releases energy which causes vibrations. Occurs: Along fault lines Environmental Impact: Landslides, mudslides, broken gas lines, destruction of buildings, avalanches, fires, breaks in the ground, tsunamis. Human Impact: loss of life, property damage

  6. Wildfire • Main Features: intense fires over a large area. They can produce winds that can be 10x stronger giving fire more oxygen.
