  3. Essential 55 • Rule #38 – On a field trip enter a public building quietly.

  4. Why should we read drama? • We should read for the love of literature. We will read the play to find out why Scrooge, Marley, and the other classic characters of the story have become so familiar to readers for more than 150 years. • We should read to be entertained. • We should read for information-how have times changed? • Reading drama can give your imagination a workout.

  5. Background of the story • In Charles Dickens’s novel, a greedy, mean-spirited man named Scrooge has a life-changing experience. Put yourself in Scrooge’s place as you read. Would you react the way he does? • The play is set in nineteenth-century England, a time of rapid industrial growth. In this booming economy, the wealthy lived in luxury, but the poor and the working class suffered. Dickens’s novel shows sympathy for the situation of these people and suggests a way in which it might be changed.

  6. Who is this?

  7. Victorian literature • QUEEN VICTORIA • Born on 24 May 1819. On 10th June 1837, following the death of her uncle, William IV, she became queen at the age of eighteen. • She fell instantly in love with her German cousin, Prince Albert and they were married on 10 February 1840. Between 1841 and 1857 Queen Victoria had nine children - four sons, five daughters. Prince Albert was very interested in art, science and manufacturing and took a keen interest in the building of the Crystal Palace. He died suddenly of typhoid in 1861. • His widow was overcome with grief and wrote in her diary, "My life as a happy person is ended!" She wore black for the rest of her life. For a long time she refused to appear in public, which made her very unpopular. Queen Victoria died aged 80 on 22 January 1901 and a new age - the Edwardian - began

  8. 4 panels • In ACT 1 of the play, a man revisits 4 key episodes from his past and learns something important from each scene he witnesses. • Imagine that you are being escorted on a journey to four key scenes from the past. • Make a sketch of each scene and summarize it in words. • Also, write a sentence for each panel to tell what lesson can be learned from that scene.

  9. Sign ups/props • Look on p. 608-props are an important part of a stage production. These provide additional information for an audience and help establish the theme, period, and mood of a play. Every item on the stage, except for the scenery, is either a set prop or a hand prop.
