  1. Gender Aims To define what we mean by gender To analyse gender representation in TV drama

  2. Gender Vs Sex The widely held view that gender is the result of the nurture we receive as children is contrasted with the idea that gender is influenced with biological factors in our nature. NATURE VS NURTURE

  3. What is Gender? • Gender is a social construct it is not just biological. It is also an aspect of our demographic. • Despite what we may think there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ man or woman. There is no ideal femininity or masculinity. • There are many different types of masculinity and femininity.

  4. Gender Stereotypes • What are some of the gender stereotypes we would associate with men and women? Look at page 176 in handbooks and the complete table. • Men: • Breadwinner • Not in touch with their emotions- rational • Obsessed by sport and sex. • Physically stronger • Immature • Competitive • Aggressive • Ruthless Women: Emotional irrational physically weaker Gossip Mature and responsible Maternal Domesticated Physically weaker Supportive and sensitive

  5. Gender Stereotypes and the Media • What were some of the media products we identifies as being gender stereotyped? • Top Gear • ‘Sheila’s Wheels’ advert • Power Rangers • ‘The Fast and the Furious’. • Bridget Jones’s Diary.

  6. Gender and TV • Gender representations and stereotyping is prevalent throughout the media. • Why is TV influential in the formation of stereotypes? • TV is the most accessible form of the media and has the widest ‘reach’. Therefore it can be responsible for perpetuating stereotypes. • For example, perhaps our cultural stereotypes of northern working class women is drawn from ‘Coronation Street’ or ‘Shameless’ and not from our personal understanding of the culture or region . • Task: Watch intro to a TV drama’ What assumptions can we make about gender from it?.

  7. Gender and TV characters • Task: Think again of TV drama characters. List some that you believe are a stereotype of a particular gender trait. • Eg: the passive weak female or the aggressive, rational male.

  8. Recap- TV Characterisation and gender. Look again: What can we specifically say about the gender representation of these characters on page 166 and 167?

  9. The female of the species. • The social and cultural changes to society and its effect on femininity. Lets do some reading… • Read page 174 in the handbook and do task. • The feminist and post- feminist movements. • Read page 175.

  10. The changing face of man • Men’s place in society and their changing roles. • Read page 177 and 178 in handbook.

  11. Analysis of Gender in TV Drama • Main task: watch key scenes from a TV drama and analyse the gender representation of a character. • Use notes sheet on page 179 of handbook.
