Update on Outreach and Advocacy Initiatives by NM Healthier Weight Council (March 2011)

The NM Healthier Weight Council's committees are actively working on vital outreach and advocacy initiatives as of March 31, 2011. The Outreach Committee, led by Patty Morris, focuses on fact sheets for sweetened beverage reduction and complete streets, while the Advocacy Committee, led by Mary Oleske, concentrates on citizen training and promoting the HWC Policy Agenda. Internal Communications, led by Jimmy Masters, ensures the website is current and membership packets are being developed. The Policy Committee, currently led by Erin Marshall, advances policy topics such as sweetened beverages and complete streets.

  2. Outreach Committee Lead: Patty Morris Charge: create strategies, develop materials, track progress Current Focus: • Fact Sheets on Sweetened Beverage Reduction • Fact Sheets on Complete Streets in NM • Funding opportunities for Sweetened Beverage Education Campaign

  3. Advocacy Committee Lead: Mary Oleske (Stephanie Johnston) Charge: coordinate citizen advocacy trainings, support local community affiliates Current Focus: • Identifying venues to share/promote the HWC Policy Agenda • Creating a process for tracking workshop requests and prioritizing approval

Internal Communications Committee Lead: Jimmy Masters Charge: maintaining website, supporting membership, technology solutions Current Focus: • Keeping the website updated, including updating news items under the News tab • Creating new membership packets (in progress) • Exploring contracting to keep website updated on a regular basis • Once we increase membership in outlying areas of the state, develop ways to connect and engage them in the Council work
