Topic 12:The Time Between WWI and WWII Standard: Objectives: Students will describe the politics and culture of the roaring twenties. • 9-12 1-B.4 Analyze the major political, economic, and social developments that occurred between World War I and World War II, to include the following: • a. social liberation and conservation reaction during the 1920s (Examples: flappers, prohibition, the Scopes trial, the red scare)

  5. Flappers Make an index study card for: A flappers were the ideal woman of the 1920s. They practiced emancipated (free) values and dress. (Read text page 441)

  6. Prohibition Era Make an index study card for: The prohibition era was a time when the 18th amendment was in effect (alcohol was forbidden). It was a period of rebellious backlash.

  15. Over Production Make an index study card for: During WWI, industries such as mining, lumbering, and agriculture had expanded. After the war, demand fell. Since the supply was greater than demand, these industries lost money and workers lost jobs. (Text pages 464-471)

  16. Credit Structure Make an index study card for: During the 1920’s, many people wanted to have new products that were becoming available, e.g. cars, refrigerators, radios. They didn’t have the money, so they bought on credit. People owed a lot of money, and when they couldn’t pay, the companies and banks they had borrowed from lost money. (Text pages 464-471)

Unemployment meant that families didn’t have money for basic needs. • People didn’t get enough food and medical care. • Some men and children left their families to live as hobos on the trains. • Children and women had to work. 2. Many schools closed down because there was not money and children didn’t get an education.

  26. Western Migration of Farmers During the Great Depression Make an index study card for: Farms in the Midwest failed and farmers and their families moved west, especially to California. There was not enough work in California and they were not treated well. The failure of farms was caused by hail (1930), drought (1932 to 1935), mismanagement and degradation of land, falling prices of agricultural goods, overinvestment in farming equipment, overextension of credit.
