  1. Israel/Palestine Conflict By Siri, Claire, Natalie, and Brandon

  2. Terrorism…what is it? • Terrorism is the radical form of Islam, and depending on the point of view, it can be defined as a crime or a holy duty. • The United States Department of Defense defines terrorism as “the calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological.” (directly from terrorism-research.com) • Both the Palestinian side and Israel side practice it. • One terrorism group is Al-Qaeda, known as “the base,” is a federation of separate Islamic groups all dedicated to the killing of and mayhem against Christians, the West, Jews, and Muslims (excluding the Taliban). • The other terrorism group The Taliban is a Muslim fundamentalist group that formerly was in control of Afghanistan’s government.

  3. What is their goal and what are the obstacle in the way of peace? • The Terrorists have a goal to kill everyone who doesn’t conform to their beliefs and terminate the existence of Israel. •  Terrorists fail to see any other solution that would give them what they want other than killing “non-believers.” • Neither side will decide to simply sit down and discuss possible solutions. • Violence persists, and violence won’t solve any of the issues. 2011justinversonlors.blogspot.com prisonplanet.com

  4. Religion Expert questions • Islam and Judaism most common practiced religions • Similarities: Both want the same land to live in, will fight to get the land, use violence to take land, will not go and talk about the issues, both sides have a practiced religion

  6. Religion expert questions continued • What religious claims can each side make towards the land of Israel? Jews say that Israel is the land that God promised them so they should live there; Arabs say that they have lived there first and stayed longer than the Jewish people • What religious obstacles are standing in the way of a peace settlements? Both sides were thinking the other was trying to get the entire country to conform to their religion, used propaganda to express their religious views about the other side.

  7. Israel http://www.stateofisrael.com/flag/ http://newmedia-eng.haifa.ac.il/?p=3131 http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/kids/hh/goplaces/article/0,28376,1885626,00.html

  8. History • Israel was made an official state in 1948 after 50 years of fighting between the Zionists and the Arabs and after the holocaust. It was made so the Jewish people could have a country of their own and a home, if the Holocaust never happened, we probably wouldn’t have Israel. http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/mfh-eretz-israel.htm

  9. Zionism and Persecution • Zionism is the idea of setting the Jewish people free. They are fighting for a state of Israel because they have been belittled and persecuted over the years. This movement has been around since the 1800’s. • Persecution is a program to get rid of people because of how they live/ think.

  10. Israeli leaders and the United States “President--Shimon PeresPrime Minister--Benjamin Netanyahu (Likud)Foreign Minister--Avigdor Lieberman (YisraelBeitanu)Ambassador to the United States--Michael OrenAmbassador to the United Nations--Meron Reuben”- Bureau of Near Eastern affairs http://newmedia-eng.haifa.ac.il/?p=3131 • The United States and Israel are like brothers. The U.S watches out for Israel and gives them help if they need it. In 1983 they made the Joint Military Group and many other groups to help them. We assist them with security and economic means. Israel has relations with non arab Saharan countries, and many of the Arab countries around Israel do not like Israel.

  11. Israeli and Palestinian conflict • Most Israelis understand where the Palestinians are coming from, and understand and want to find a solution; other Israelis want to get rid of the Palestinians. They kind of have, it is a grey area; the Israeli police can stop anybody, but the Palestinians are hostile towards the Israelis. There are terrorists either way. • The big thing in the way of making peace is the Israelis don’t want to get rid of their land, same way with the Palestinians. The Israelis are using intimidation while the Palestinians are weapons. I think making two different countries may be one solution, another is putting the Palestinians on reservations much like we did to the Native Americans, I guess It could work with the Israelis as well. Making two different states in one nation is another idea as well like Israel and Palestine each have different state governments, but there is one conjoined national government.

  12. Palestine • evidence of Palestinian life have been dated back almost 200,000 years ago, such things as pots and tools. • in 62 BC the Romans seized the land of Palestine • When the first roman governor arrived he started to rebuild the cities that the Maccabaeus destroyed • those cities where Samaria, Beisan, and Gaza • 60 years after the Romans entered Palestine Jesus was born in Bethlehem

  13. Palestine Cont. • in 1967 a war was going on but it was only a short 6 day war where Arab troops were ordered to mass at the border of Israel and the Sinai peninsula • the outcome of the war in my opinion is that the war reminded me of a civil disagreement but in a slightly bigger why
