  5. Research, research, research Do I meet the minimum requirements to teach in this country? Does this country require a visa and if so, how difficult is it to get one? Do I meet the inoculation and health requirements of this country? Does this country have a strong ESL market? Does the average teaching salary of this country work with my lifestyle? What is social, political, and economic picture of this country, and how will this affect me? Does this country interest me; can I envision myself living there for an extended period of time?

  8. And Activate! • Situation 1 – Your boss has recently brokered a deal with a local high school. You will teach three 4-hour lessons a week there. You will have 20 teenagers in each class. Your students are at the intermediate level. • Task: Consider how you would teach such a long class while keeping students engaged. • Consider your list of engage activities. • Which of these would work for this group? • Why did you choose those? • What problems would you anticipate in teaching this group? • How would you physically set up your classroom? • Make a list of resources and materials that might help you to teach this class. • Situation 2 – Your boss has recently brokered a deal with the Board of Education in your town. You will teach three 45-minute lessons a week at two elementary schools. You will have at least 30 children in each class. Your students are true beginners. • Task: Consider how you would teach such a long class while keeping students engaged. • Consider your list of engage activities. • Which of these would work for this group? • Why did you choose those? • What problems would you anticipate in teaching this group? • How would you physically set up your classroom? • Make a list of resources and materials that might help you to teach this class.

  10. The Interview Take turns interviewing a classmate for a job using the questions from the Interview section of your Job Search Manual. Do you have any reservations about hiring this person? Why or why not? Give your partner feedback about how they could improve their answers.

  11. Before you go… Are you qualified for a job in your country of interest? When is the best time to find a job there? Do you need to obtain a visa before your departure? Do you need a work permit to teach? Will the school help you obtain one? Is it a good idea to go there before you have a job? Why or why not? Are there any health or educational requirements you need before you can begin work there? What would your approximate salary be? Is accommodation provided by your employer? If not, how much does housing cost? Is health insurance provided? Is that a requirement for you to accept a job? Why or why not? What is the most important resource for you? Is the cost of living reasonable? What are the typical work hours in a week? Are there any other important bits of information you should know? Would you consider a volunteering program in order to teach in your country of choice? Why or why not?
