Design of ATC Course • Should be driven by Occupational Survey Report (OSR) • 29 Jan 04 process starts--AFOMS • Utilization and Training Workshop (U&TW) • Summer 04 • ATC Air Force Career Field Manager (AFCFM) Chairs • MAJCOM FAM/Career field Inputs • Straw man STS sent out to MAJCOM FAMs prior to U&TW • Each Specialty Training Standard (STS) items is discussed at the U&TW and proficiency level code is assigned

  5. Design of ATC Course • STS serves as a contract between AETC and its customers (you) • School Length/Instructor Manning could be affected

  6. Current ATC Course • Course length: 72 academic days • ATC School is divided into three courses: • Fundamentals: 28 academic days/was 25 • Tower: 44 academic days/was 20 • Radar: 44 academic days/was 27 • New way of training since Oct 2001

Fundamentals Course • Course duration is 28 academic days (224 hours) • Teaches BOTH Tower and Radar general info • Strictly a classroom / lecture environment • The CTO test is given at the end of Blk II (3 Blks) • Tower and Radar orientation tours are given • Assignments after graduating from this course

  8. Tower Course Divided into 4 blocks of instruction: - Introduction to Control Tower Operations–5 days - Basic Control Tower Operations–12 days - Intermediate Control Tower Operations–17 days - Advanced Control Tower Operations–10 days

  9. Tower Course TESTING • Each student is progress checked 3 times in each of the 4 blks-- LC, GC & FD • The standards are graded to the proficiency level established by the STS.

  10. RADAR • The radar course is 44 days long and broken down into 3 blocks of instruction: • Block I – Introduction to Radar Approach Control – 15 days • Block II – Advanced Radar Approach Control – 26 days • Block III – Approach Control Operations (Non-radar) – 3 days

RADAR TESTING • Students are evaluated by performance progress checks in the following areas: Block I – each student is progress checked 3 times -- Evaluated after departure, approach and arrival Block II – each student is progress checked 5 times -- Evaluated in each position (approach, assist, arrival) -- Evaluated by progress check for PAR -- Evaluated by progress check for clearance delivery Block III – one progress check for non-radar

  12. Military Training Flight (MTF) • Complements the two-fold mission of technical training school: Academics and Military Training • MTF is a continuation of basic military training • Phase Program
